And if I put my fingers here, and if I say
"I love you, dear"
And if I play the same three chords,
Will you just yawn and say
It's all been done before

An innovative way to ruin a song.

Remixes and sampling can be fun and creative. A nice break from the routine if only in small doses.

The only thing that peeves me is when praise, usually from the press, for this technique goes overboard. I don't want to hear that every Rapper who samples is great (i.e., P Diddy) or a genius (i.e., Kanye) because he has a hit with a previously recorded song. They use it as a crutch because they can't come up with anything original.

Devils advocate:

how is that different from most pop songs (good and bad alike) which recycle the same chord progressions over and over.

Hell, PM Dawn's Jesus wept samples tons of stuff.  I recall, for example, that Downtown Venus samples Deep Purple (kentucky woman?) but I'm certain I never would have known it was in there if i hadn't read the credits, and I'm sure they could have gotten someone to reproduce the snippets (and probably without paying a royalty).

Sampling can be done in very original ways that I sometimes think are harder to come up with than to just hire some session guys to come in and fill in the blanks.

In the end, it's just using a different palate.  And in all cases it can be great and it can suck.  Virtually everyone samples.  Hell, Dream Theater sampled on Images And Words.

How many times can we say 'What it is?'

What it is is talent reprocessed as drivel.

The fact that this remix butchers Aretha is very clever, considering the fact that the person described in the song would gladly do it, just to get a couple quick bucks.

Gotta go, I'm a man on a Rush.

If you don't speak French, the lyrics roughly translate as;

'Rule one, you don't have to shout so loud,
Rule two, if asked, say you are Canadian,
Rule three, you don't have to shout"

repeat

Whenever I heard the term "rock steady" I think of that TMNT bad guy. I read too many books to my son years ago.

I actually like DJ Zebra's stuff. Weird, but I like it.

There's serious music outsite as well as serious crap inside the US.
