I've noticed a resurgent trend of complaining about the frequency of certain artists and their songs. I'm guessing the people listening understand that it is the nature of a public music station to go through cycles.

It enhances the process of learning new music and the techniques the artist uses to convey their message. In fact, it might even be considered a talent of the program director to layout several tracks in a row in order to teach the listener through a comparison / contrast process.

So to complain about a single song in this case makes no sense when you forget about the songs before and after the one you want removed.

Having an opinion about an artist or their music, this station or it's programming, or any of the contributing members is trivialized if you don't take the time and energy to put it into the context of the larger picture.

BTW - I really enjoy RP and it's diversity. Bill and Rebecca have opened a new world of sounds and ideas to me and my friends. If you feel as I do please contribute generously!

It's an 8 for sure. I didn't mean to imply that I don't like it! It's like eating something that tastes different than what you expected. Like the first time that I drank flavored water. It made my brain get tangled up.
I just want to hear little Bobby Plant warbling, "Close the door..."

Wow, I find the lyrics really beautiful, and I think it's courageous to write about the deep pain that stems from childhood.
I like this song more each time I hear it.

I couldn't agree more, on both counts.

Speaking with the perspective of an "aged" 50+ year old, the pains of childhood can become more intense as we age.

PT has many songs that I prefer over this one, but it is a very poignant song that fits beautifully in the context of the album (thoughts from the dead Grandfather from the novel). The string arrangements are just lush and the lyrics are sublime.

All the things that I needed
I wasted my chances
I have found myself wanting

When a mother and father
Gave me their problems
I accepted them all

Nothing ever expected
I was rejected
But I came back for more

And my ashes drift beneath the silver sky
Where a boy rides on a bike and never smiles

And my ashes fall over all the things we've said
On a box of photographs under the bed

I will stay in my own world
Under the covers
I will feel safe inside

The kiss that will burn me
Cure me of dreaming
I was always returning

And my ashes find a way beyond the fog
And return to save the child that I forgot

And my ashes fade among the things unseen
And a dream plays in reverse on piano keys

And my ashes drop upon a park in Wales
Never-ending clouds of rain, and distant sails... distant sails

A dead Grandfather's musings on how he failed his family as they scatter his ashes ...

This song is good, although there are better songs on the album.

Again, thanks, RP.

Here, here!

This is a sublimely beautiful song, though.

Normal is my favourite cut of the Nil Recurring set.

But it is kinda intense. An acquired taste I'd say.

RP cannot make money off music sales but I doubt that was a factor.

Plus some of the lyrics and refrains are similar to the Sentimental cut from Fear of a Blank Planet. I realize that it is not the same song, but there ya go.

Wish I was old and a little sentimental.

This whole album is themed around the current teenage generations' alienation, and what I heard from concert-goers was that Mr. Wilson did quite a good job expressing things from their perspective. Not bad for a fellow 40 year old!

Very well said. Similar feeling about this album. And my 14 old son loves this band as much as I do.

Sometimes I see the same behavior in my son as these songs echo, and both being a part of the songs, observing it, and having the product (my children) part of those observations in there (and maybe conscious of Steve Wilson's writings) makes it all the more special (and haunting).
