Actually, that's exactly why it's called "state of the art". Mastery of technology is exactly artistry. Just because you take for granted technology such as the brush, or ink, or paper and canvas, doesn't mean that mastery of those old/ancient technologies is not a prerequisite for those forms of artistry.

Few forms of art are not mastery of technology (singing and dancing come to mind).

I'd like to invite you to join the rest of us in the current age, where Pro Tools is the "brush" of audio artists.

No, he probably couldn't sit down & play that drum part as well, or cut that vocal. But Bonzo or Johnny couldn't have sat down with a copy of Pro Tools and come up with something like this if their lives depended on it.

So BillG, looks to me you're equating what Leonardo Da Vinci did with paint, brushes and canvas with what any 12 year old can do with photoshop. Mastery of technology does not equate to artistry. DJShmolli may be a fantastic artist, but NO ONE would know that from THIS track since it is composed ENTIRELY from other artist's work.

"Mashups" do not equal original art and sonic mashups equal something similar to "doodles" , "scribbles" or even etch-a-sketch. I'm really suprised to see you defending this BillG, sonsidering your age and experience in the business.....but I guess "business" is the bottom line, at least with this track?

To DJSchmolli I would ask, please get some of your ORIGINAL music uploaded to the site, let's hear that!

Count me in the list of big fans that would love to have a copy of this song.

I've been listening to Radio Paradise on and off at the office, but this song made me sign up for an account so that I could rate it highly.

More tracks like this, and I'm going to have to send Radio Paradise some money!

Thanks Schmolli!

Absolutely, tons of variables, time meter, tempo, eq and volume levels, melodic key (i really don't know what i'm talking about but know enough to be dangerous) and the DJ has probably got as many hours into it as all the artists combined.

A-freakin'-men, Bill. Graphic designers don't take the photos, or paint the illustration, or write the copy. Does that mean that they don't have any talent? (I sure hope not!) How about movie directors? They didn't write the script. They don't act. Why do we celebrate them?

This piece makes me appreciate these enormously talented musicians in a whole new way, and recognize aspects of their music I'd never noticed before. That didn't happen by accident. It took an extremely talented person many hours to create.

My rule of thumb is: if I as an unskilled noob can't do it, it must be art :oD. And I definitely can't do this!!

Awesome work Schmolli, and thanks again for giving us all the info!

Well, ziggytrix has said it all basically...

I might add that I not only produce mashups (although this is what I'm famous for), I am a musician, remixer & producer of original tracks too... so this is a really narrow-minded comment leathepea. You know producing a mashup doesn't take as much time as producing an original song but both need experience & knowlegde.

Everybody who requested the song check your PMs ;-)

You are speaking like a damn fool who doesn't know the first thing about production, yet feeling confident enough in your ignorance to slam something which, regardless of whether or not it suits personal preferences, is clearly quite expertly produced.

What do you know about talent?

Hadn't noticed this before. Johnny's "solo" version sort of runs out of gas but this is cool.

It's pretty rare to hear a mashup where everything just seems "in place". The Cat Scratch Fever guitar doesn't meld in quite as nicely as the other instruments and Johnny's voice, but it's a damn fine effort. Very nice.

Mashups a.k.a. bootlegs a.k.a. bastard pop isn't that new. Have a look here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bastard_pop

I mashed the first tracks in 2000, probably I've been the first here in Austria ;-) Oh and mashups are not necessarily like this one, even the others I made. You know most mashups only use 2 sources (1 instrumental & 1 acappela). Tracks where single instruments are sampled to make a brand new backing track are very rare.

Thanx fingerpin for the info, quite interesting!!

From Wiki...

"God's Gonna Cut You Down", also known as "Run On", is a traditional folk song which has been recorded by numerous artists representing a variety of genres…

… The song has, in the past, been modified to fit the boundaries of genres like country, folk, gospel and techno. As "God's Gonna Cut You Down", it was performed by Odetta on Odetta Sings Ballads and Blues (1956) and Johnny Cash on the posthumously released American V: A Hundred Highways (2006). As "Run On", it was recorded, among others, by Elvis Presley. A version featuring vocals by Bill Landford & The Landfordaires was remixed by Moby and features on his album Play."

So first of thanx for the play! I know it's pretty difficult to produce mashups that everybody likes, especially when there are so many famous tunes in it like in this case. So here's the full sample list in case you didn't recognise all the elements used:

Johnny Cash - God's Gonna Cut You Down (vocals)
Led Zeppelin - When The Levee Breaks (drums)
Beastie Boys - Sabotage (bass)
Ted Nugent - Cat Scratch Fever (guitar)
The Beatles - Come Together (lead guitar)

I don't think I've ever seen an artist come on here and discuss their work. The concept of a mashup is new to me, but if they're all like this, let's have more!
