I was at work today, and between my arrival at 9:00 and going out for lunch, the radio station in shipping played the same song 3 times. It wasn't an OK song. I'd rather hear Fleet Foxes three times per hour than some crumby manufactured song once a day. Incidentally, I don't even work in the shipping department, so the crumby song may have played more than three times this morn. I guess I should point out that the station in question is a 'top 40' station, so they only have about 40 songs to choose from. The song in question was extra top, so they had to play it extra lots. So there. Pity I can't force the whole place to listen to RP. |

I bought the CD at Target for 10 bucks (good value) but after a few listens, it becomes a little grating. They are good in really small doses, more than that and it has that sameness to it with no discernible details to say "Ooh, I like that song because of this, and I like that song because of that". My money could have been spent better on other artists. But I'll rip the favorites for the ipod. Better off buying the songs you like for 99 cents rather than the whole album. Let's hope they get better over time. I think the potential is there. Definitely there. |

well since this is really good and MMJ has taken a turn for the absolute worst with their latest, i think they'll get off the hook. ...CSN though?.............REALLY??!? you gonna bring them up any time someone breaks out 3-part harmonies? |

Something haunting and pulls fondly at my ancestral memory about that vocal part at the end.

After many (and many and many...Bill really likes these folks) listens it's the bad vocal production which ruins an otherwise decent song. They should have stopped right before the acapella about 3/4 in. The end really sours the rest. Still a 4.

Can someone please explain what 'derivative' means? Does not all music derive from what has come before? Wish people would say what they mean more clearly. Thanks...
"Derivative" is obviously in the eye of the beholder (for instance, for the life of me I cannot understand why Ryan Adams is accused of being derivative), but to me, it's when you immediately associate a tune with another, earlier artist. BTW, I like these guys. I just keep hearing MMJ and CSNY (and, now that somebody mentioned it, The Shins), that's all. |
