They've been quite disappointing for me since this album. Heard them first here on RP, love this album, by far. But since? Not so much.

Great album - a thematic one that rewards listening straight through.  Still clear it should not have won the Mercury Prize award over Radiohead's In Rainbows however!

You won the bet. I ended up watching all 59 minutes and 2 seconds of another video of that concert. Great performance! Thanks for the link.

It's got nothing to do with alcoholism(although alcohol plays a big part in the song and in the video). It's a song written about the mourning of their friend(who used to play in the band)...."the seldeem seen kid".

One of the best songs about alcoholism I've heard in a long time.  I really like the crunchy guitars and how twisted some of his phrasing is.

"There's a hole in my neighborhood, down which, of late, I cannot help but fall."

He could have said "There's a bar I can't pass", but instead he went for something a little bit more complex to capture the helplessness of the addiction.  Freaking sweet.

I think I started really disliking Elbow when a friend had the album on at a party. Wasn't a huge fan anyway, then they left the album on to repeat in its entirety three times. Who does that?!!?
