I'm not a drummer, but I've been playing mostly the drum parts in Rock Band. It has made me listen more closely to songs and really pick out the drums. I find myself concentrating on trying to hear all the parts of the song instead of just the guitar or voice that tends to stick out in most pop songs. I keep coming back to the drums, though, because I really enjoy them. I love the drumming in this song. It is more varied than simply 'keeping the beat,' but I think it fits in with the overall song very well. It is the standout part here, like the guitars and voices of the norm, but doesn't overwhelm. fredriley wrote: Interesting comment from a 'pro' perspective. It certainly made me listen to the song in a new and more appreciative way. The drumming certainly adds interest to it, and IMO doesn't overwhelm it quite as much you fear. Maybe you concentrate on the drumming 'cos you're a skin-basher yourself ;)

Dating myself here, but it's like a distinction I've always made between Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa. Rich was an amazing technician as a soloist, but to me always steamrolled right over any music he accompanied. Krupa, on the other hand, always fit perfectly inside the music he accompanied.

"I will see...him whom I saw" - nice to see someone using the much-neglected subjunctive which is falling into disuse in English (written as founder, and indeed only, member of the Society for the Preservation of the English Subjunctive, or SPES). Nice song too. I always think Emo when I hear BfL but I don't really know why. Maybe yer woman on the cover looks a bit emo-ish? Anyway, 7 from the (pedantic) Nottingham jury.

for a second i thought that the album cover said "two suvs"...which i thought was odd. i mean, one is plenty right? made me ponder whether she was thinking that this song was soooo good that she would be rewarded with two suvs...but alas i had read it wrong. back to my cup of coffee.

Please play "Dear Prudence" again to cleanse my square, mid-century palate.
Odd you should pick "Dear Prudence" to clean your palate. That particular song was remade by Siouxsie and the Banshees which, to my ear, Bat for Lashes kind of sounds similar to. |

Don't worry. I'll enjoy it on your behalf. This is an amazing artist.
I don't fault you for your opinions however. To me, she is a young newer mash up of Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Tori Amos but with her own voice in her own right. I aprpeciate the bold avante guardness of her sound. But I equally understand how it would be polarizing to others as are the aforementioend artists I cited.

Thanks for that but I'm not easily bruised. It's all a matter of taste! I love MMJ and get trashed for it constantly. It doesn't matter as I think they're awesome just the same! |

Dear chyk5, I think maybe what prompted helgigermany's comment was the quality of some of the comments from other listeners. You get shot down for honest opinions, sometimes, and that can make any of us a bit paranoid. I wish that sometimes people would discuss things a bit more calmly and fairly... Thanks, rotterdam, you got the point!! |
