...i guess someone will have to submit the full version to get it played?..this radio edit loses a lot of the song's depth...

after about 4-5 listens I got it and it became brilliant!
This album is a piece unto itself and best taken in whole.
Hell of a piece!!!!!! Time Flies is a nice song, maybe the 3rd or 4th best on the album.

General PT question for all: How far did you drive (or how far did you travel in hours) to see PT for this tour? I am curious. For me, driving to Boston was a real trip (no pun, seriously) as it is the town of my birth and also where I really learned how to drive when we moved there for a brief stint after college. It was 5 hours each way and we did get to spend the night in South Boston (r.e. Good Will Hunting) for a total of 10 hours travel time.
Peace all.

I drove about half the distance - from Central Oregon up to Portland - that you did. I was completely blown away by the show. The Incident is one hell of a piece of music. The supporting tracks from earlier albums in now way overshadowed the song cycle of The Incident. I am of the opinion that Porcupine Tree really does get better and better with each album, and they were already mind boggling five albums ago! Bill, it is a travesty that only one track gets played from this album. Might I suggest adding Remember Me Lover to the rotation? C'mon Bill, you know you want to... |

In agreement with a lot of the comments here - this album is definitely a grower - needs to be listened to many times and needs to be listened to in its entirety.. I've been listening now intently for the last couple of weeks in prep for their tour (Oslo 23/10 ) and it just get better & better! I must say the few first listens I was left wondering if I was gonna like it - I was anticipating some more Deadwing / FOABP, but like it I do!! It is a slight change in direction but it's great and the more you listen the more influences you can hear: Floyd, Genesis, Rush & Marillion to pick out a few I'm hearing... |

I bought "The Incident" the day it came out on the 15th. I saw them on the 27 in Boston. I had listened to the new album maybe 30 times. You saw them on the 18th, 3 days after the release. So you could have listened to the album maybe 5 or 6 times. After my first listen, I honestly have to say, I was a little dissappointed. I thought "This might be a bummer of a show", this music is rather different, and I'm having a hard time understanding the theme here". But after the fourth listen, I thought that this would be one hell of a show, similar to seeing Genesis do the whole "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway". Now that would be an experience!!! But PT did it for me live 5 days ago. I loved it. It was one of the most energetic experiences of my concert going life. ...is it just me, or is bill cutting out the latter two-thirds of this song, the bit that gives the whole piece context and depth?..
...i tend to play RP at a modest volume in the office while jaunting about different tasks, so it could just be me getting distracted in the middle of the track, i suppose...

Saw them tonight in Toronto.
After the show Gavin was standing in the lobby drinking a Corona and talking to some people. I had a chance to pat him on the back and tell him how tremendous the show was.
And it really was. The Incident is darker and heavier than a lot of the old stuff but mesmerizing nonetheless. (I heard some Genesis influence, as did a previous commenter.) And there are no better rock musicians performing right now than PT.
Re other posts: the second set included Sound of Muzak, Lazarus and The Pills I Take, with Trains for an encore.

The show at The Vic (Chicago) was awesome. The new material reminds me a lot of Signify which I regard as a masterpiece. It was very intense emotionally. No complaints about the direction of this band, they can do no wrong at the moment.

We didn't get Lazerus, but got the first live performance of Remember Me Lover instead, and the encore was The Sound of Muzak (which they didn't play for FOABP here) and of course Trains.
Remember Me Lover is such a great song I hope Bill adds it to the Playlist soon (hint). Slipstream! Glad you loved the show too! SOOO worth the drive from Cincy!! |

Deadwing wrote:It was a great show! The Incident live was very powerful and they did a great job with it. They almost didn't play though as their equipment truck got lost on the way to Cleveland!!! Their tour manager came onstage right before Kings X started and explained the situation to the crowd and assured everyone that PT wanted the show to go on if we wouldn't mind a slightly longer changeover between Kings X and PT. Of course the crowd started cheering like mad and Kings X got to play a slightly longer opening set to buy some time- they were very entertaining LOL! Their gear didn't show up until a few minutes before 9 PM (when they would normally take the stage). Their roadies busted ass and they started playing right around 10 PM- (I was sort of amazed at how quickly their crew put what is a fairly technical show together- and how few technical problems they had considering there was no sound check!!) They played The Incident in it's entirety as the first set and took a 10 minute break. It was jaw droppingly excellent and the new visuals are very powerful. Second set was: The Start of Something Beautiful (one of my favs) Buying New Soul The Pills I'm Taking (middle section of Anesthitize) Lazarus Strip the Soul/ .3 (awesome!) Bonnie the Cat (I know... what will be) encore: Mother and Child Divided Trains It was a great show and Steven Wilson's voice was outstanding the whole night. Gavin Harrison was a wonder to behold on the kit as usual. They all seemed to be in great moods and that was really fun to watch. Someone threw a pink bra at SW at the end of the show and he threw it at Colin Edwin (the bassist) who promptly modeled it for the crowd. That must be a tradition at their Cleveland shows- on the FOABP tour Gavin ended up with the bra LOL! The good news is that SW said they will be back touring in the US in the Spring since they had only scheduled a few shows here this Fall. ***************************** Great synopsis—I was there too, and what a show!!!!! LOVED IT. —Slipstream |

Rafter101, I gotta sympathize. Saw Robert Fripp in concert in the early 1970s. He and fellow musicians played material that would "shred wallpaper at 100 paces" (to quote Fripp). Wasn't familiar with it. Didn't enjoy that part of the concert. But I do enjoy some of King Crimson's edgier stuff once I've had a chance to listen to it. Thanks for the great concert reports everybody! Glad most enjoyed themselves. Keep missing this song on RP but am enjoying the CD. |

Material nobody ever heard of??? Most PT fans would have bought the new album the day it came out (or pre-ordered it on iTunes) and would have certainly listened to it before most of the shows. Not to mention, the usual point of touring is to play your newest material to sell your newest album, and then cover the hits and personal favorites, which from what Deadwing posted, is exactly what they did. While the new album may be a bit of a disappointment, it has some great tracks on it, and certainly ranks higher than FOABP for me. |
