I just know for a fact you do not know the half of Mark's discography, because you wouldn't be saying something like this if you did...
10 Sjaaks, please tell me how you know this 'for a fact'? Okay, I confess. Half of Mark's discography sounds the same as the other half. Feel better? |

I never knew the name of this song before. My gramps was kind of a single handed sailor. He was on a carrier in WWII, then later lost his right arm while handpropping an airplane.

I rate all Dire Straits as 9's. I rate Mark Knopfler's albums as 10's.
10 for song writing-10 for guitar and 10 for arrangements... he just gets better and better- that's godlike.

Absolutely no-doubt in my mind this is the number one DS song for me. But i can't believe i just missed it over taking a piss and bumping into somebody for a quick chat. Oh well, guess i'll have to play it from my mp3 player this time to make up for loss... :)
Can't rate it any lower than a 10...

You always wonder if anyone reads anything you write in here. Glad to see that I struck an evidently resonant chord with my earlier comment. Thanks for the note.

Knopfler my not have a great voice in some folks' estimation but he is a great singer. I don't give it a 10 because Godlike implies (again IMHO) a sort of life-changing, epic quality and this song is more subtle and human than that, and I know that means I'm arguing over a point (twixt 8 and 9) but this song is the sum of its parts, not a ragtag band of hangers on dragged upward by Knopfler's virtuosic ax work. And Knopfler can sing.

Single Handed Sailor (written in honor of Sir Francis Chichester, first man to circumnavigate the globe solo, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Chichester ) is a particular joy. I'm pretty sure Joshua Slocum was the first solo circumnavigator. He left Boston in 1895, and returned to Newport R.I. in 1898, three years before Sir Chichester was born. Chichester was the first to solo the "clipper route", still the fastest sailing route around the globe. But we do agree on the excellence of this album. |

Why work at something you don't like? I do, however, can't get enough of Dire Straits and the music of the same genre (JJ Cale, Clapton, et al.).
Neil Young released a double CD with Crazy Horse years back, called The Year of the Horse I believe. Kind of weird release, esp. for Neil Young, as song titles didn't match the label, and stuff like that. At any rate, it's a live recording, and included at the start of one of the discs is an audience member yelling out, "All your songs sound the same!" (I give NY credit for including this on the recording.) There's a 3 beat hesitation, and then Young slurs back, "It's all one song!" Which is true of so many bands. Keith Richards plays the same basic riff, never mind song, for over 40 years - that's part of his genius. People here, I'm sure, can name dozens of others in this vein. I saw Knopfler and DS in concert many years back, and thought it absolutely great. Unfortunately for my estimation of him, I saw Clapton in concert, same venue, about 3 nights later. Still, I like it - good enough for an 8/10 rating! |

Absolutely! Knophler's playing style is what I find hypnotic in much of Dire Straits' work. His vocal stylings are unique, versatile, and fit his music well whether as a solo artist or with DS. GREAT headphone music too! Check out Love Over Gold sometime...his O-C tendencies got the best of him on that project from what I've heard over the years....took ~4 years to complete. |

I gotta say that I find Mark Knopfler's voice pretty tiring. It seems like one of those voices that's ok for a few songs but after that, I'm done.
