This remains my favorite EC song.  I saw him at a small NYC bar in 1979 and he rocked the house.  He didn't, however, play this song!  No doubt he left it off the program because it ain't really his song!.

This is one of the most dangerous songs for me to drive to. Whenever this comes on the radio in the car I can't stop myself from drumming along with it on the steering wheel. Drives my Better Half nuts but meh, whaddyagonnado? There has never been a time in my life since I first heard Elvis Costello when a song of his on the radio doesn't instantly put a smile on my face.

I'm not a big Elvis Costello fan, but I love this track. Love the message... So... what IS wrong with peace, love and understanding, anyway?

These days, you'd think these are just horrible concepts to integrate into your personal philosophy, or your politics, judging by the way the winds have been blowing the past ten years or so. I guess the naysayers would just have us all be selfish, arrogant, cynical nihilists.

sigh...

I'll stay with the peace and love crowd. It's the only hope we've got as residents of this troubled planet.

Well said!  Peace, love, and understanding works for me.

Love his vocals in this.  Better than the Nick Lowe version (though I know it's his song).

Let anyone sing his way. I sing in the band. But this time I caught myself wishing this song ends soon. :)

Sadly, I have to agree with you - I too am a baby boomer and I am ashamed of my generation and that of my siblings who were teenagers in the 70's.  However a lot of our children's generation and the young ones coming up now do give me hope.

As for the song, I agree with one other listener below - I really like Elvis Costello, like the sentiment of this song too.  I just wish he'd stop sounding like he's suffering from a massive brain injury when he sings the chorus!  ...It desperately needs another cover version - I'm thinking something a capella and slow sung by someone with a really good voice, but I can't think of who I'd want to do it.  Any suggestions out there?

Try Nick Lowe's version, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7txCdLCP9U

OK, Bill. I will NOT be able to get anything else done at work today if you keep up with this kind of set! :

Elvis Costello - Peace, Love and Understanding
Patti Smith - So You Want To Be A Rock 'n' Rol
The Who - The Seeker
Muse - Undisclosed Desires

Incredible!{#Bananajam}

Two great covers in a row.

By two of the finest songwriters in rock and roll.  Gotta love it.

I was born in the mid-50s so I'm in my, er, mid-50s.

As for my generation, the late Abbie Hoffman said it best: the yippies went to law school and became yuppies. Apparently that depressed him so much it contributed to his suicide.

Of my circle of friends, yes - most became the very suburbanites they so detested in college and that transformation was becoming apparent when this song came out. I've always considered it the moment I realized my generation was over, and a new generation was here with something to say. And it was not always complimentary.
