Waits always sounds to me like that tramp on the park bench cradling a six-pack of Special Brew and smoking Capstan Full Strength unfiltered. A great street poet, but his singing is an acquired taste, right enough. One worth acquiring, maybe, but he's hardly Singalongatom - I personally prefer covers of his work so that I can appreciate the poetry and imagination without feeling as if my ears are being scraped by a cheesegrater. |
