I was lucky enough to see the Airplane reunion at The Filmore in SF a decade (or so!) ago...

They opened with this song, and I'm telling ya, I was instantly transported back to that era, with those crazy sounding amps. It rings San Francisco 60's!!!

What an incredible voice... I have seen her shots recording in a studio, several feet away from a microphone, and still this incredible vocal power comes through... 99% of modern vocalists have to be placed less than a foot from a mike to get any power...

What a great song from a "plastic fantastic" album...  love it...  still have the original vinyl...

much as I love this song and Grace Slick's voice, I have to say that Jim Carey's version in The Cable Guy is one of my favourites..

Literally I am 60 and I concur with you, Hannio.  Anyone that thinks the sixties was crap would of not been welcomed to those free spirited days of bold idealism.  And yes,  I still wear my freak flag proudly.

This studio cut rocks, but the live version on the Monterrey Pop Festival CD is pretty weak.

I miss the innocence and optimism of that time.  I wish they'd known then what they know now about how free love and do your own thing could be twisted into something completely opposite of love and freedom.  This song is a good reminder to me of what life used to be like before things went horribly wrong...

Miss you so much, Ann...

rest in peace...

Great tune, but this sounds exactly like a song from 1967 to me - nothing about this song or this band ever struck me as being very "far ahead of their time".

Janis and Grace, by Jim Marshall

I believe it is only fair, where it displays any photo or illustration, mentioning the author, in this case, the great rock n'rool photographer, Jim Marshall - James Joseph Marshall (February 3, 1936, Chicago, Illinois - March 24, 2010, New York City, New York)

Rock and Roll photographer Jim Marshall is photographed while he is taking pictures.

Jim Marshall passed away at the age of 74 on March 24th, 2010. He was one of the greatest rock photographers of all time and captured some of the most iconic images in rock and roll history. This is a quick look back at my encounters with the legend. Follow the link above to see the shots I captured of him at work.

Still speaks — melodiously SCREAMS, mind you! — to me so poignantly, so urgently, so spot-on after all these years...  Some folks I've known have liked to scoff that the Airplane "just weren't good enough, mate," but I maintain that Kantner and Slick and Co. hit it so right on such certain eternally cool stunners that it made them every bit as good or better in the long run than so many "truly good" bands over the years...and I have observed that Real Passion can trump just about anything else sometimes, and being in a state so well spoken to and of by this masterpiece qualifies as one of those times, and here's the cool part: they occur again and again, for ain't that just the way things are?  Rock on with it, RP!

Agreed 100%

JA doesn't have that many hits, but the ones they do have will kick your ass into next week.
