I wonder when this was recorded. Her recent work is, for me, unlistenable, though I love her work with 10,000 Maniacs. This, though, good enough for me. A 6 on first listen with, potential for higher. A country feel and it works for her. I hope she's re-found her younger voice.

I've always loved Natalie's sound. I love these earthier American tunes!

Is this the trembling voice set? Who's next, Tracy Chapman?

Nice. Haven't heard this one. Back in my youth (80s-90s), I always wanted Natalie to bear one of my children. However, as I've matured, and learned that she can be more than a bit challenging interpersonally. So the offer still stands but, at this point, we'd definitely have to live apart. I just can't put up with that kind of b.s. in my life any more...not even for Natalie Merchant. LOL. |

Better that than in one's eyes. Now that's gotta hurt. |

Wow! I know many RPers detest NM, but this is rather extreme, I'd say! |

I have to turn it up a little when I hear NM. And to think we both enjoy Radio Paradise.

I have to turn off the radio every time I hear Nat's voice.

A producer once said to Neil Young during the taping of a multi-artist singsong that he sounded a little flat. Neil looked at him incredulously, then said, ''Sure--that's my sound, man.''
Which is fine, since Neil is about much more than voice. His guitar work and songwriting are more noteworthy than his voice. Ditto with Dylan or Waits or Cohen or many other artists who get common complaints about their singing abilities.
Natalie sure puts her voice out in front and it is so dominant that the blatantly obvious flaws - "her sound, man" - are fair game for criticism IMO. |

I wish Bill would play this tune more. This is the first time I have ever heard it. I'd like to hear it more, and, also, I'd like it to get a fully developed rating! It deserves better than this picket fence histogram!
