Good tune.

Certainly hopperesque! No question! Thought so immedeately!

The first mates name was Hopper. . .

. . My god he had a whopper, once round the deck, one round his neck and up his a*** for a stopper. (from an old english tune often sung at Twickenham and on deck of the good ship Venus)

I came here to comment on the song and got distracted by the Hopperania...IMHO "Speed of Life" is a nearly  perfect pop song. I found the balance of the disc, hmm, so-so, but this one's outstanding.

Beautiful and introspective. This premise of 'Speed of Life' often bestows upon my ever wondering and sometimes failing brain. This song is so damn good! Rest in peace, Elaine...we are gonna miss you.

Really great song. A View from 3rd Street is one of the absolute GEMS of my music collection. Boy, but the 1995 Jude sounds different from the 1990 version!  Not worse or better... just different.

Thanks Bill!

AVF3S is a terrific album. Thought he was a one album wonder until I caught more at RP!

Wow this really really sounds like Sting, possibly "I'm So Happy I can't stop Crying" from Mercury Falling. I guess both songs are pretty derivative.
This does not mean I don't like it of course. Good tune, good lyrics..

Edit: Thank you Proclivities, that Album cover was making my brain itch.

Thanks for the Greg Kihn reference.  I knew that guitar sounded familiar, but I couldn't place it!  Remember is a great song as well.

Lyrics, for whatever they're worth...

Like ghosts on open windows
The curtains rise and fall
The past is a foreign country
At the dark end of the hall
And the morning is an offering
To the shelter of the day
But the violent come
And they bury it away

Time goes by at the speed of life
Slower than a slow dance on a hot summer night
Faster than the skin breaks on the edge of a knife
And we just go on at the speed of life

Like questions begging answers
The stars appear at night
What's it mean to love somebody?
What's it mean to be alive?

I heard a little girl laughing at her first sight of snow
Saw an old man dying in a room he didn't know

While the world turns through the ages
It's a most peculiar ride
Holding on to one another
Moving at the speed of life

We just go on at the speed of life
Family on the midway in the carnival lights
Moving in a circle through the sounds and the lights
And it all goes by at the speed of life

edit 12.15.11 I just tried to buy it again.
