This song has an incredibly profound meaning... it is one of those rare, priceless songs where the lyrics are a perfect match for the melody and harmonies...
scar tissue is something we acquire physically through painful experiences... in this song, the phrase "scar tissue" is the metaphorical conceit that is the core of the meaning of the song...
the chorus of this song drives a lot of people bananas, and it is ironic to hear them sarcastically bitch about how the chorus is impossible to understand— are the Red Hot Chili Peppers singing, "the birds are shared is a lonely view" or are they singing "the burns are shed is a lonely view" etc. etc. etc.?
What people do not understand is that the chorus is deliberately ambiguous— it describes scar tissue that people cannot understand... the key word is "lonely"— if nobody else can understand the scar tissue, then it is an existential burden of isolation for an individual with some disabling injury that other people cannot understand...
"Scar tissue that I wish you saw, sarcastic Mr. Know-It-All..."
what they are saying is that it is impossible for strong and healthy and happy people to understand what life is like for somebody who is suffering from an injury others can neither see nor understand...
the haunting melody of the music is a perfect match for the tragic meaning of the lyrics... this really is a brilliant song, even though many people don't understand the meaning and cannot see the scar tissue...

You should hear him sing with just acoustic guitars (a la at The Bridge concerts hosted by Neil Young). He's terrible! Nice guy, though, if that counts for anything. |

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Scar Tissue
John Butler Trio - Company Sin
Any questions about Bill's genius?

Summed up perfectly. I, too, wish they would bring back the funk.
However, standing on its own and not in comparison to their ealrier, better stuff, I still give "Scar Tissue" a 7.
Rick Rubin convinced the Peppers they could so ballads and now they can't stop. |

Saw them live in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, over a month ago (60.000 people!!!). They lacked the spirit they used to have; they were just 4 guys doing their job, but still: this song is so mellow.....

They are all just retreads of the same sounds.
Bring back the funk, Peppers, and not for just one or two songs from a double CD. Bring back the funk, socks and all.

I like the way the line runs up the back of the stockings. I've always liked those kind of high heels too. You know, I... No no no no, don't take 'em off, don't take... Leave 'em on, leave 'em on.

there is way better RHCP songs to play on RP. I would have gone for something more funky but funk and RP don't seem to get along. |

Sounds like Californication, only more irritating, if that were even possible. At least this one seems to be a bit less repetitive.
I'd thought that Hootie and the Blowfish had taken "slobbering over microphone so that lyrics are incomprehensible mush" to its apogee, but this group is not far behind . . . .
Thank you to Angelus for citing amiright.com . . . My favorite mondegreen is "There's a bathroom on the right."

My favorite (that I first heard it as) is "with the purple shade it's a lonely view". I like the image of a sad guy, trying to be the life of the party with a lamp shade on his head, being shunned by the other party-goers.
