I'm just wondering from where I am recognizing the melody... Try to listen Fast car by Tracy Chapman :-) Its quite similar, but it sounds like some "remake" and Ani have made it by her way.

Love this one.

And I'm beyond your peripheral vision
So you might want to turn your head

Hypertalented. I always wonder which voice I would choose: Ani or Sinead?

I;ve never really like Ani that much.  But this particular song, done live like this, is pretty darn good.

Amazed that so many rave about this pretentious annoyance. RP could take her and Natalie Merchant off with no loss.

love the lyrics, but like Alana Davis's version better.

You know, with Ani, it always seems like if I didn't get the invite to her "party", I'm out of the loop. She's just too hip for me, I guess.

I love her live performances—she communicates her emotional tie to a song as well as anyone and does this consistently.

Priceless version of this song.  Passionate, brilliant.

squint your eyes and look closer
I'm not between you and your ambition
I am a poster girl with no poster
I am thirty-two flavors and then some
and I'm beyond your peripheral vision
so you might want to turn your head
cause someday you're going to get hungry
and eat most of the words you just said

both my parents taught me about good will
and I have done well by their names
just the kindness I've lavished on strangers
is more than I can explain
still there's many who've turned out their porch lights
just so I would think they were not home
and hid in the dark of their windows
til I'd passed and left them alone

and god help you if you are an ugly girl
course too pretty is also your doom
cause everyone harbors a secret hatred
for the prettiest girl in the room
and god help you if you are a phoenix
and you dare to rise up from the ash
a thousand eyes will smolder with jealousy
while you are just flying past

I'm not trying to give my life meaning
by demeaning you
and I would like to state for the record
I did everything that I could do
I'm not saying that I'm a saint
I just don't want to live that way
no, I will never be a saint
but I will always say

squint your eyes and look closer
I'm not between you and your ambition
I am a poster girl with no poster
I am thirty-two flavors and then some
And I'm beyond your peripheral vision
So you might want to turn your head
Cause someday you might find you're starving
and eating all of the words you said

You mean that the other way around. Ms. Morissette was still a child actor in Toronto when Difranco started recording.

Hey, I was one of those screaming teenage girls!  I guess I should be proud that I was an early adopter, though, as I started going to her shows way back in 1996.

I like Ani's angrier tunes. She's got a beautiful/angry song called Untouchable Face that's absolutely fantatstic

Truly one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.  I love this song and am so glad to have the music of Ani DiFranco in my life thanks to a tip from a Canadian friend of mine.  Her lyrics are like poetry.  This song, hello birmingham and her 9/11 poem self evident all stir deep emotion for me not that I don't enjoy loads more as well.

An acquired taste that I'll likely never acquire.  Not a good start to my RP listening, I may just skip the rest of the day.

Oh, geez - a couple of drops of rain and you're gonna go back to bed?  Sorta skewed logic there, kiddo. {#Lol} Still - you have the choices, so if you choose to disregard a day of RP just because of one song, I hope you have a day's worth of much better stuff with which to substitute. (I hope you know I'm only teasing you!)

P.S. - Ms. Difranco has a lot better songs than this one (which got played to death on AM and FM radio, even here in the land of sand fleas and sagebrush.)  I don't like this one much, either, but I do like some of her music.

Her and Beth Orton should do a gig together...dueling heavy breathers.
