It may be controversial here. It may have been overplayed on radio...
But there's something about the verses of this song that are so intensely evocative of LA. The comment that the lyrics are "trite" seems excessive. Yes, the chorus is very sincere. And broad.
But the verses have a poetic specificity that makes it all worth while. I'm so glad that it still turns up on RP.

If this were really a self-parody, I'd rate it higher than "1 - SUCKO BARFO." Others have sentimental attachments to this tune and that's OK. It makes me wish there was a puking emoticon.

after that "because, even her smile looks like a frown" line, i'm expecting something to the effect of "turning that frown upside-down."
crappy song. really trite and boring.

Nah. I think it's lower than that.
Maybe we need to hear some of Yawn Mullin's other songs? |

I always liked this song, no matter how everyone else tends to be so down on it. Besides, it makes me miss LA. I've only heard one other song by him. could you play others from time to time?

Hmmm... That's the set that was just played now... Maybe a robot's back there after all... :???:
And the set has just been played again. Don't agree with the first three songs, but hey, if everyone likes it, why mess with a good thing? |

You answered your own question. Most people are probably here because they can't stand the Top-40s. Some people have a borderline-irrational hatred of anything that started there, and make biased judgments about the skills of an artist based on how their songs were marketed. It may not be right, but it's not so hard to believe. |

Wow, I sure don't see why others think this song (and the artist) sucks so loudly. Granted, it may not be a masterpiece, but it sure beats the pants off quite a few other songs that most of us here on RP seem to tolerate (and many seem to love). I agree that this song was overplayed by the corporate radio conglomerates, and I'm not sure if I prefer the acoustic version over the earlier version, but still, it's way better than some other songs that I see my fellow RP'ers fawn over.
. . . just a couple more cents into the fray . . .

If this song represents an artist way ahead of his time, the future looks pretty bleak to me. |

I see not much in the heated hatred columns lately...
that's a good thing.. well.. from my view anyway.. as *I* like this version of the song enough that I'd like to put an 11 on it... and I don't do or wish for that often!
And it worked even better in the set just played...

Yucky. I think it's the half speak, half sing thing that's pissing me off.
And that cloying "It's like Nashville with a tan" line just doesn't cut it. Too cute for his own good.

Wow. So much negativity on Shawn...he's one of my favorite artists and not because of this song. In fact, when I saw him live last year, when he did the acoustic version of this song, he even commented with a roll of his eyes "Here's a song you may have heard a few thousand times..."
Don't be pissed at Shawn because the record execs and radio stations played this song over and over again. Hopefully this is not his career.
On a cool note, Shawn is teaming with Matthew Sweet and Pete Droge to form a band called the Thorns. Should be cool.
RP...how 'bout some Pete Droge?

LOL !!!
I really should check back more often on songs that have this kind of love / hate communal chat about them..
... nasal plucking ... wow.. and I thought I *hated* michael stipe's singing ... I'd have to say it might be a tie... although after the pluckin' stipe would still be singing somewhere... so it might not make it worth while..

I gotta agree. This guy sucks ass. Reminds me of that Saturday Night Live skit where the guy is singing so passionately about chopping vegetables. |

Well he *must* be all shades of evil if people are and about this song... especially the acoustic version...
And as I find with many acoustic versions of songs.. it sounds better, more human... take Nirvana's Teen Spirit? Remade by Tori Amos AWESOME!! ... the original.... mostly noise, the remake by Wierd Al Yankovic.. Extremely funny.. the acoustic version by Tori... it sounds like a real meaningful song... acoustically the song sounds like it has a perpose, meaning, but done by nirvana .. yuck!
anyway.. Thank You RP for continuing to play the ACOUSTIC version of Shawn Mullin's song once in a while!!!

Actually he did a steal a lollipop from me once...
I initially resented this song because it got so much exposure (again-- a reason to avoid FM) but I finally gave in a decided that it is a good song on merit. Not all that inventive, but enjoyable. |
