I saw it on (I'm guessing) PBS a while ago. It was quite good and in addition to the great music, it also gave you a fascinating history of the Romany people and their culture. |

Highly recommended!

I enjoy that.

Venus is on Earth? God really does bless America. Maybe there are, like, a few venues that you, like, haven't visited yet? Like, maybe even outside California? |

They're cute alright and they've played the American crowd like a charm. That said you want real flamenco listen to Manitas de Platas...now there's some real guitar playing there

I've seen them twice, once at a large outdoor venue (3rd row) and once at a smaller indoor venue (Jones Hall - (last row). Both shows were excellent but had totally different vibes. The outdoor show was lots of drunken dancing and partying while the Jones Hall show had a bunch of stuffy folks in suits and evening dresses.
Either way, I'll make sure to get my tickets early for the next tour.

Sorry to say that I'm in agreement with WordMariner.
I saw Gypsy Kings at Mountain Winnery - one of the greatest venues on earth - most of the crowd appeared drunk on cheap wine - these guys seem to let their egos be inflated by the lowest common denominator.
A clear contrast from McLaughlin, DiMeola & DeLucia who didn't seem to let the adulation go to their heads when I saw them live together years ago.

Their show was supposed to be "the show of the season" at the Botanic Gardens and they were just awful! They spent half the day before the concert doing sound checks and then when they came on stage, THEIR sound failed and they played with only 2 mikes despite the need for all 4 or 5....then they played a decidely SHORT set of 1 hour, left the stage "to take a break" and never came back. They finished playing before it even got dark! Pretentious, full of themselves, and all-around BAD! Of all the tunes they could play for a damned encore, they played "Volare"....a f$#@&^**ing cover song! I will NEVER suggest to anyone to go see these jerks! :puke: :puke: |

From AMG: "The Gipsy Kings are largely responsible for bringing the joyful sounds of progressive pop-oriented flamenco, called Sevillana in Spain, to the world. The band started out in Arles, a village in southern France during the '70s when brothers Nicolas and Andre Reyes, the sons of renowned flamenco artist Jose Reyes, teamed up with their cousins Jacques, Maurice and Tonino Baliardo, whose father is Manitas de Plata. They originally called themselves Los Reyes and started out as a gypsy band traveling about playing weddings, festivals, and in the streets. Because they lived so much like gypsies, the band adopted the name the Gipsy Kings."
Sounds like you've had fun in life, too, GolfRomeo. :)
These guys played here in the Old Pueblo last week. Incredible show highlighted (literally) by nature's best monsoon lightning. Unfortunately, they had to call it short, but did finish with 'Bamboleo' as an encore (as they often do). Catch 'em live, if you can. |

I had the immense good fortune to live in southwestern Spain (Andalucia) for 4 years. Musically, it was very satisfying. "Sevilliana", as it is called there (Flamenco is similar, in the way bluegrass and country are similar), is as much or more a part of life there as bluegrass is linked to Applachia. The music has had a similar resurgence in recent years, largely due to the influence of gems such as the Gipsy Kings. Not every band needs to be adventurous constantly....IMO, anyway. There is something to be said for just being very, very, very good at what you do. Otherwise, we'd have a universe of Sigur Ros bands-- fun for a while, but largely unsatisfying over time.
