Actually, I think John Hammond Sr.'s version is better as is his take on "Heart Attack and Vine." Burn me at the stake.

justin bieber covering a Metalica song would have as much soul. Tom's song (love the spandex comment too {#Cheers} )

There's 9 versions of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah at the time of this posting.

The version off their live album is much better but this is still fun.

If a song is truly great it should stand up to any cover attempt. Case in point.

This rendition is FUN!  I think it would fit in with "Dead Man's Party," "Hell," and whatever Bare Naked Ladies felt like contributing.

This may be Tom's song, but the first time I heard it was Moxy Fruvous performing. Their drummer, Jian Gomeshi is host of CBC Radio One program 'Q'. One of the better Arts & Culture talk shows I've listened to.

No. Just no. Once performed, any song is open to covering. This cover extends and adds to the Waits' song, and is a whole lot more tuneful than ol' gravel voice, whose singing is an acquired taste, to put it mildly. Waits' street poetry is exceptional, though.

Like Dylan, it's difficult to cover Waits without sounding "off". However, their lyrical brilliance shines through, and this is no exception.

This is about 10% as good without Tom Waits' growly voice... something about Waits' voice and lyrics that go together like bourbon and beer.
