I saw these guys in person as the English Beat, General Public and later a reincarnation of the Specials.  Always fun.  The first time I saw them the smaller of the two opening acts was some band called REM.  All I remember of REM was that the lead singer had a lot of hair....

There was a lot of crap music in the '80s, maybe more than other decades. But the lowpoints of the 70s were just freakin' awful.  The nice thing about time is that often the new songs you loathed become bittersweet memory trips after ten years...or at least somehow not as wretched.

I liked this song when it came out, but after hearing it thousands of times (several times in the last week on RP), I have to politely request:  Enough is enough, Bill!

Saw them live a few months ago fronting Squeeze.  They stole the show.

Has it really been 30 years? Crikey! It's a lotta' fun.

Yes indeed.  Several years ago, I saw the Beat live at the Mezzanine here in SF, and they were short a couple of the original members, but wow, they were just fantastic.  It made me very happy to see these musicians, who were 20+ years older, still doing great work and having not gotten lost in the drug vortices of the 80's & 90's.  Clearly, they were quite professional and managed to still invoke that energy and excitement that is so quintessential to their music.

English Beat = one of the best things about the '80s, a decade when musical superlatives were few and far between.  

This song is soooo good it makes us tear our clothes off and dance...
