This song is really getting to me today, in a good way.

I like the vocal layering she does on this and many other songs. Reminds me of Joni Mitchell's work.

I like this song better than other Tori Amos songs. She isn't whining as much. Sounds pretty good. Good selection!

Have to agree. Even if it does have its lengths, it flows quite well and has some very fine tracks on it. Also, on a more superficial note, her last album with a beautifully designed cover. Her botox-meets-photoshop look on recent releases just makes me sad (especially on Midwinter Graces, shudder - look below at your own risk). |

Man, this song gives me the shivers sometimes. That and blind rage at those attitudes out there and coming face to face with them sometimes.
Mmm-hmm. That's what Tori excels at — wrapping the evil in a pretty candy shell so you don't notice it immediately. |

I generally loathe Tori, but I don't mind this song/CD (and I really like the cover photo). |

At the high end of her range she gets a bit fingernails-on-chalkboardish for me. But man, down low, there. . . .

Lily is dancing On the table We've all been Pushed Too far I guess on days Like this You know who your Friends are Just another dead fag To you that's all Just another light missing On a long taxi ride Taxi ride
And I'm down to Your last cigarette and This "we are one" crap As you're invading This thing you call Love - she smiles Way too much but I'm glad you're On my side, sure I'm glad you're on My side still
You think you deserve A trust fund Just because you Want one Sure you talk the talk When you need to I fear The whole world is Starting to Believe you Just another dead fag To you that's all Just another light missing In a long taxi line Taxi line
And i"m down to Your last cigarette and This "we are one" crap As you're invading This thing you call Love - she smiles Way too much but I'm glad you're On my side, sure I'm glad you're on My side still
Lily is dancing On the Table We've all been pushed Too far today Even a glamorous Bitch can be in Need This is where you know The honey From the Killer bees +i'm glad you're on My side Sure I'm glad you're on My side Sure I'm glad you're on My side still
Got a long taxi ride Got a long taxi ride

Vocal layering is something of a cliche these days, but it really works on this song.

Others might have other personal favorites, but I agree this album is simply terrific from start to finish. And what I like best is that all the songs are stunningly pretty, just like this song. None of her more challenging odd sounding songs on this record— and I do like some of her more weird songs, some not, but this record is just sparkling with harmonies, melodic beauty, and richly textured and catchy. It's the one that sold me on Tori. I should also add that I haven't fully grasped all the lyrics, which tackle a lot of female identity and women's struggles as well as feminist themes that Tori is obsessed with, but the songs are all part of a cycle in a whole concept album on this record. |

While I don't agree that it's her best album (my personal fave is "Little Earthquakes"), I do think that this album was her best since "Under the Pink". Her other releases during that time were a little too spotty for me, and her lyrics were too obscure on some of the songs. There are exceptions to this, of course ("Hey Jupiter", for instance), but overall I preferred this album because it was more consistent all the way through. |
