I think it's certainly conceivable that someone could do a decent cover of this song, but this isn't it for me. |

Yawn.

Problem is the original is so good and memorable (and somewhat still recent) that it is hard to top off, even interpreted by a great singer like Cassandra Wilson.

Agreed. Cassandra's effort is clearly prefered by some, but for my taste I much prefer Mr. Cooke's arrangement and execution. |

Tuned to another song after a few seconds. Too damn boring.

hmm, I severely disliked the original version but this is bearable (apart from the corny lyrics, but that's not really her fault)

April 28: Still waiting to see if it gets accepted. It's getting 10/4 on LRC at this time.
May 6: Hey, it's out of LRC and accepted today! Damn, Rebecca must have one hell of a backlog.
I'd like to hear that version! Hear, hear!!
... uh... yeah.

Can't help but think of the September 11th connection I have to this song, as do others.
Therefore it's a bit hard to wrap your brain around this version. I don't really dislike it as the song stands on its own and I like her other songs ("I've Grown Accustom to His Face" = personal fav), but I'm not enjoying it either.
Meh.
p.s. Saw Sting do this live = actually very moving.

Man.. this was a good song when it came out. Great to see Sting perform it live, and slow dance with one of the backup singers... now it's been almost completely trampled by the crowd. Sad.

Well done. Enough soul here to fill in what's missing out of a thousand or so other covers.

Ha! Just requested some Police... and this came up right away. Bill, are you really manning the controls 24 hours a day?
One of my all time favorite songs... unfortunately, though Sting must be honored, this just isn't cutting it. Far from the magic of the original.

Well I would'nt impose my tastes on anyone, I have a difficult time adjusting to them myself but... this music has no soul, its like a house without people. A ticking clock has more geist. I suppose if I were alone on a desert island and it played over and over I would eventually at least hate it...

The strange thing about remakes on RP is that the honest attempts to interpret the songs with emotion seem to get slammed? If she changed the beats and added Leonard Nimoy or Johnny Cash or the Smirfs it would be rated higher. It is a GREAT song, and I love Sting's music/voice/etc, but this is better than a 5.5.
If many of the voters here saw her singing this while on vacation in the hotel lobby bar, they'd be telling their friends to go buy her album.
How about this: I just don't like the song. There, I said it. Let the lynching begin. :whip: |

Have you ever heard her do Harvest Moon? (New Moon Daughter) Ye haters of Niel (misspelling intentional; you know who you are) Young would find even this wonderful.
There are very few songs of hers I don't lllllllllllove. And the "Who Would You Spend An Afternoon In A Rowboat Fishing With" test? She wins.

Dead on comments, rgio. This is a solid 8 in my book, regardless of what the 1-ers say. |

C'mon folks -- 5.5?? Listen again! Try, if you will, to let go of your deep memory of the original and just listen with your heart...

I agree, the original is so great, especially the live version off of All This Time...but I feel like the last 10 times I've heard this song on RP it's been this cover of it...unfortunately |

Her voice reminds me a bit of how Joni Mitchell's sounds, nowadays. Even more so because it's in a laid-back Jazz style. Mm, come to think of it, there are quite a few similarities between these two artists.
