The way she sings "O
h so CLEAR" puts me off the whole song. The word "clear" sounds strange, like her throat tightens up.

Oh, for heaven's sake! ONE WORD puts you off the whole song?
I admit it sounds like she ran out of air, but I love this song.

So, you're rejecting the Tom Waits original because he's a man? (Just teasing you, Fred.) {#Roflol}

Gotta say - Diana Krall has a scary way of seducing men and women with her voice - I've heard the original, but this rendition just makes me weak in the knees.  And by the way - temptation will be a mainstay in life - it'll always be there, so you CAN resist it, knowing it'll manifest itself again and again. Choose your temptation.  I'm pretty sure there's a wise saying in there somewhere, but I'm tired, so I'll leave it to someone else to extrapolate.

I prefer the original, but who's to say she can't record her own version?  I like it.  What has to be added really?

She (her bassist actually) added a great deal to the first few seconds of the song, as far as I'm concerned.  After that, I'll take Tom's version.

I've always thought they'd be one of the most interesting celebrity couples to have dinner with.

A few years ago my date and I found ourselves alone with Mr and Mrs C in the back section of a good Vancouver restaurant, and seated close enough that I could have tapped Elvis on the shoulder with my bread knife. We could hear every word of their conversation (kids, what he did in the studio that day etc) and it took a real effort for us to not sit there silently eavesdropping and at the same time carry on our own conversation realizing that they could hear us, too.  My date had on a pair of vintage patent leather black and white flame Doc Martin oxfords that E gave a few sidelong glances, but it never turned into a conversation opener.

Now I can say I had dinner with Elvis and Diana...and that they like their Bloody Caesars extra spicy.

"but I think she is doing fine"???  I hope that was an attempt at humour.  Diana Krall was named 'Best Female Vocalist,' for a second year in a row.
