I thought this sounded a lot like Everything but the Girl (EBTG) so I did a little digging and found this. "In the 1990s, she(Tracey Thorn from EBTG) collaborated with Massive Attack on several projects, including the soundtrack for the motion picture Batman Forever where she contributed with "The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game". Their first project together was the song "Protection" from the album by Massive Attack of the same name. She also sings on the track "Better Things". -Wikipedia |

And exactly why I hate Pandora and other "radio" apps! Randomly chosen songs based on "preference" will never replace good taste and an even better ear! |

My friend sent me the CD of "Amplified Heart," and it's STILL in my CD player, in rotation. I like this song, too - Ms. Thorn's vocals are wonderful when backed with Massive Attack's instruments and quirky timing. Yep - good song. To quote Romeotuma (who has been scarily absent lately!), this song is SO good for the ears.... Yeah, actually pulled up the playlist to see if this was EBTG... Looks like they've been played recently! Throw my vote in for more EBTG. |

Massive Attack over the years has significantly different sounds depending on when the track was recording. I love Protection and Danny the Dog, but am not too fond of some of their newer tracks (which I'm guessing is what the concert you went to was covering). So to answer your question, while there is a fair number of songs that bear some resemblance to this, they have some that certainly don't as well. I'd suggest seeing what you can hear of some of their older work.
Also, still love this song. I think it was my introduction to the general world of Trip Hop back when I first heard it.

OK, I'm really confused here and would appreciate some help. I recently saw Massive Attack live (November 2010) and they were nothing like this.
I saw an incredibly loud band with fast-beat trance music and no singer. (Maybe one or two songs had lyrics out of the ten-song set.) Only good thing: Their backdrop was an ingenious lightboard that appealed to a geek like me. It displayed lots of politically motivated stuff, but I couldn't connect the text with anything played or sung, so it lost value rapidly and began to distract me from the music — alleged music.
Didn't like them when I saw them, but like this a BUNCH. Is this song a glimpse of their former musical tastes?

My original comment on this song more than a year ago (you can see how rarely I revisit songs which - er - do not appeal to me!) was unnecessarily harsh. Every song has its enthusiasts (I see you rated the two songs "10" and "9", respectively). There is no need to step on that enthusiasm.
Sorry! When time permits, I will go through my ratings history and delete such comments in general.
In the future, I will reach for the MUTE button rather than my keyboard... although it is going to be tough to stifle myself with most jazz! I don't give two shits what you do, Pardner. I just thought, and still do think, that liking the one and hating the other was strange. I didn't realize you were the only one entitled to opinions around here. |

KeithT wrote:Love the song and most of Massive Attack's work. A technicality on this listing, though. I believe this song was available only on the albums "Protection" and "Collected". As I recall, "Blue Lines" (as credited here), was the debut album and wasn't recorded with Tracy Thorne, who (I think) is the singer here.
Perhaps an edit to the song details is needed?
Yes, the CD depicted is Protection. |
