Yes, Stipe and Cobain had become friends just before KC's suicide. Mike Mills plays electric guitar on this, Kur(d)t's "lefty".

A great version, not as bleak/dark as Monster, and all the more frustrating as this isn't commercially available...

I am curious as well. I don't particularly like this song, but I like a lot of Michael Stipe's vocal stylings, I rarely even consider his sexuality and/or age.
