For the first few moments, I was expecting St. Teresa, by Joan Osborne.

Why do we have to hear the same music over and over? Four times in a month is about all I can take.

Nope.  'Course not.  Your original comment was:
It is 'Bolero'' and a very good rendition of it as well I doubt very much if Ravel would dislike it.

Perhaps I misunderstood your meaning.  You capitalized "Bolero" and attributed "it" to Ravel in the same sentence, implying that Zumurud is something like a cover version of Ravel's Bolero, which it is not.  I agree with you that it's a bolero (lower-case "b"), but it's not Ravel's... different melody, lacks the key change near the end, etc.

What I am trying to get accross is like a conductor of an orchestra he will interpret the peice which may be entirely different to another conductor who has interpreted the piece tottaly different, and yet both are reading from the same score sheet.

When my late uncle was in the seminary (he was considering the priesthood) he was forbidden to listen to Ravel's Bolero as it was "too suggestive"... I suspect Zumurud would also have made the banned list!

Everytime I hear the opening bars I think that I am about to hear Maggot Brain, maybe one day.

He has such a wonderful touch. Every now and then you run into someone who really understands their instrument and makes it their "own."

Very cool. I hear PG and Loreena McKennitt, both who have used this "turkish" type of influence.

Isn't bolero a style like waltz,  concerto etc?

Hey! You read my mind!

I jumped to this page to comment that the violin line sounded a lot like Ravel's Bolero.

Check out Adam Hurst. He has CDs on amazon as well as his own site; www.adamhurststudio.com He's from/in Portland and often plays new music on the street... to gauge public opinion ... Similar, but not the same. Cello, guitar, drums... more Northern California Zen/Japanese than North Africa.

There's also David Darling, good cello, but I find his moods less appealing than Gerber or Hurst... Han Na Chang plays good classical cello. She's got some passion vs the soulless  perfection of Yo Yo Ma...

there is some similar stuff on the 127 Hours movie soundtrack

Love this!  In addition to Mich Gerber's CD, if anyone is aware of music along the lines of this song, perhaps even with a more Middle Eastern slant to it (a la Dave Matthews "The Last Stop" or some of Peter Gabriel's Middle-Eastern inflluenced stuff), please let me know.  Thanks!
