Cetainly some mixed opinion here. That's why it's so nice living on this planet I guess. For me though, just more of my salary redirected to Amazon. Most excellent indeed!

That's a fair point, but you could (and some folk do) say the same thing about other musical genres with defined styles, such as blues and rock, not to mention classical music styles. The trick for musicians is to work inventively within, and push, the boundaries of these styles (12-bar for blues, say) to make it relevant to modern audiences without losing their heritage. There are also political and social drivers - reggae has never been just a musical style, but has always had themes of religion, anti-racism and liberation at its heart. I'm a white guy so can't speak 'on behalf' of reggae, but I reckon that as long as there's racism and oppression black folk will be playing reggae. Similarly, as long as there's poverty, racism and wage-slavery, there'll be blues. IMHO naturally :) Personally, reggae's religious aspect has always grated on me, even though I love the sound (and loved it even more when I smoked hash) - at times it's like Songs of Praise. So it's nice to hear reggae numbers, like this one, that aren't hymns. 7 from the Nottingham jury. |

For me, reggae and dub is as varied as it comes. I listen to stuff from the 70's to stuff released right now and there is quality all the way. I would class this as Reggae 'pop' but still a great and uplifting track. Maybe you have not listened to enough? Ok, I'm not as eclectic as I thought. Unless I'm at some tropical beach, sipping a nice cold drink, listening to rolling surf and laying in the shade of a palm tree next to the ocean, this sound is NOT for me. |
