You mean later Jonathan Richman, right? There was some complexity, and a definite edge, to the early Modern Lovers stuff. JR had a conversion experience later and stopped making songs that "might hurt babies' ears."

I love the reference to Jonathan Richman, but I disagree because I think that Feist is much more commercial (or accessible) than Jonathan. Jonathan Richman is pretty 'out there', but good on him for doing his own thing.
