Well, I think it's great. Among the previous comments, I'll agree the original was overplayed when it first aired. In context, though, it was quite unusual for the time -- no percussion, one guitar, two cellos, some violins -- and Bobbie Gentry's voice. Pretty spare, and I still think, lovely sound. The lyrics are not as remarkable, but still poignant. I think Sinead's version is even more so, and I like the arrangement too. Of course, many people hate her politics; personally, I feel fortunate to have seen the live broadcast of SNL where she tore up that picture of the Pope!

How about we throw the master tape of this off the Tallahatchee Bridge?

I like Sinead's voice, and there is probably something yet to mined from this bit of musical kitsch, but she sure didn't do it here.

Yecch!

I'll give this a 10, a big fat negative 10!

Sinead, please stop. Hollywood remakes classic films to appeal to younger audiences, thinking that such viewers would not appreciate the originals. You've followed suit. Just stop.

Go back and write some original material. Your covers are seriously eroding your credibility as an artist.

Should be a country song.

Rape. Only word that comes to mind.

But please, keep pulling them from left field. Any feeling is good feeling.

Now we know why Billy Joe McAllister jumped off the Tallahatchee Bridge . . . 'twas the voice of Sinead O'Connor what drove him to madness. They say he was screaming, "Make it stop! Make it stop!" as he threw himself into the abyss.

I didn't like the original when it came out. Overplay by the radio stations didn't help. This version is even worse. It was a stupid song then and it's a stupid song now, done in a faux ennui voice at a dirge-like pace. Ugly, ugly, ugly.

Add me to the chorus. This was a stupid song back in its day, and a straight remake isn't going to help it any.

I'm impressed by her getting the accent, though. (try to find SOMEthing nice to say)

This is the first time I've heard this version and was surprised to see it was Sinead. It's not all that bad! At least you can make out the lyrics and follow the story. As a C/W fan, I must say I never really liked the original version.

Since I gave it a thumbs up on the LRC, I'll give it a decent rating here. Even if it isnt that great it is SO MUCH BETTER than most of the crap she does...

This tune has never begged to be re-done. Here's a reminder.
