Saw them together in Nashville 3-22-13. A performance that was as good as it gets.

This is seriously cool, and follows on beautifully from Duke Ellington's Caravan.

One of the things that has drawn me to this station is the range of musical influences that are drawn together in a thoughtful manner. This is a first-rate example of a couple of virtuosi working together to bridge genres. They actually have much in common in their influences. I understand that the banjo is not an instrument that is to everyone's taste but please let's have more understanding of musicality.

Huh? Seriously? You might as well say you can't take enough classical out of a piano... |

jpfueler, What did you mean about Che Guevara being a mass murderer? It's a somewhat subjective matter.
From Wikipedia:
He was appointed commander of the La Cabaña Fortress prison, and during his five-month tenure in that post (January 2 through June 12, 1959), he oversaw the trial and execution of many people, among whom were former Batista regime officials and members of the "Bureau for the Repression of Communist Activities" (a unit of the secret police known by its Spanish acronym BRAC). José Vilasuso, an attorney who worked under Guevara at La Cabaña preparing indictments, said that these were lawless proceedings where "the facts were judged without any consideration to general juridical principles" and the findings were pre-determined by Guevara. It is estimated that between 156 and 550 people were executed on Guevara's extra-judicial orders during this time.

One of my professors had been a lawyer in Cuba. He was assigned to these kangaroo courts as a public defender. He told us about the process once: he'd meet his "client" for the first time on the day of the trial. The trial lasted ten or fifteen minutes, and would invariably end in a guilty verdict and sentence of death. The "client" and his lawyer would go through a door to the court of appeals, where the lawyer got a whopping five minutes to argue for the man's life. The trial court judgment would be affirmed almost immediately, sometimes even before the five minutes was up. At that point, the guards took the "client" out another door, to the open-air courtyard where the firing squad awaited. Some of my professor's "clients" were former Batista regime officials, some were just poor schmucks who'd gotten on the wrong side of Guevera or someone else in the "People's Revolution" who had some pull. My professor had been a law-school classmate of Fidel and a supporter of the revolution, but he was so sickened by this "process" that he got his family off the island at first opportunity and never looked back. Was rather strongly opposed to the death penalty, too, for entirely understandable reasons. |

A few years ago I saw these two in concert. I bought the tickets not expecting much, primarily to see Chick Corea... didn't know much about Bela Fleck. This in not my normal taste in music but I was absolutely blown away with the concert.

What idiotic comments. You'd think on Radio Paradise that there would be more folks who actually appreciated music and understood the difference between bluegrass and jazz, Americana form, new and hybrid, traditional...oh never mind..... |

I wonder can Bill tell if listeners switch stations? The chart of "most switched tunes" would be interesting - and this would be close to the top for me. Sorry to be a hateah.

This is amazing on so many levels... the sound contrast between the piano and the banjo, the syncopated timing of the notes, and the blend of bluegrass and jazz styles. Thanks for turning me on to it Bill and Rebecca.
