One woman, one guitar, and one voice.  Can't beat simplicity — 8

I was all ready to not like this version. Glad I listened with an open mind first. I like it!

We recently saw her and Mary Chapin Carpenter. They were performing favourites and many covers of others too. It was excellent.

Good song, whoever's version I hear.

I loved how Ann always seemed to have the last word. Me, I like the Violent Femmes' version.

Nice interpretation by Shawn.  I like Gnarle's song (even if it was overplayed somewhat) but it really holds up to the starkness that shawn gives it.  8

Agreed.  I don't listen to commercial radio so I don't think I have been infected by overplay.

Just because it got covered don't mean you have to play it. File under "Covers that did not work".

Unique approach to a song i'm sure she knew she would get a lot of flak for.

I appreciate these observations.  I too really disliked that "hahaha - bless my soul" in the original because it seemed like nonsense filler, but it is an otherwise great song.

The year I went to Lolapalooza, I saw this same song sung by Gnarls Barkley, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the Raconteurs.

You know, this is a really solid tune.
every version I've heard of it sounds good, even if I'm not a fan of the particular artists style.
It just sounds good.

Not sure if you were being sarcastic, but Gnarles Barkley is the name of the band - not the artist(s). The vocalist for that band is Cee Lo Green.

No sarcasm meant - I honestly thought the singer's name was Gnarles Berkely. Thanks for putting me right. I still prefer this cover to the original, perhaps because the original's been way overplayed on radio, perhaps because she's got a really nice voice. 7 from the Nottingham jury.

I do not think you know the words to this song.  Maybe you are hearing Ebonics because a black man sang it first.  And that's what you want to hear.
