It's certainly possible, and I've rated songs without ever having heard them on RP that I knew from elsewhere, but there are some serious haters out there that would rate anything by U2 a 1 before listening to it, and it takes some significant motivation to take the time to go through the whole album.  The gone (but not forgotten) physicsgenius is one such character, although he seemed to like to wait until it was played so he could express his joy at rating it a 1  Of course, 90% of his comments were crap. {#Biggrin}

I really love this variation, and all the Clannad-like harmonies.

Canada's National Post has a great track-by-track breakdown with Daniel Lanois.
Says he:
"After my conversation with Bono about future hymns or future spirituals, I did a little studying. In fact, with a friend in Toronto, Lori Anna Reid - she's a great singer from Toronto and she's quite an expert on spirituals. I asked her to fish a few out for me and we had a listening session and that one stood out to me. It's an old church hymn called O Come, O Come Emmanuel. Its not identical, but it's inspired by that, an old public domain melody. I laid down a little piano version of that song, again, chopped it to a tempo. Then I came up with a vocal arrangement. Bono had this "white as snow" idea. It just slowly came together."

It pains me to give U2 a low rating, but most of the songs on the CD are pretty much the definition of ho-hum.

Oh, come, oh, come, Emmanuel,

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

Would fit with the Christmas/snow theme.....?

Thank you....I heard that too, but couldn't identify the song....knew it was a Christmas carol....

Accept it and get over it people.  U2, REM and Coldplay will always be played here.  We've heard how much you hate them about 8 million times.  We get it.  We understand.  No need to beat the horse into a liquid pulp anymore.

I gotta take this back. I still don't think much of this particular song—a 3 might be a bit harsh—but the rest of the album sounds very good. It'd be wonderful if this album does turn out to be great...I used to be a bigbig fan of U2. They were wonderful on Letterman just now. Just in case someone hasn't heard, they'll be on Letterman all this week.

I'll have to remember that when the next Radiohead album comes out.

Well, I didn't give it a 1 but I sure think it's possible to have a strong reaction to something. You don't know that the rater despises the artist; they might just really dislike the song.  That person has just as much right to an opinion as you do.

Opinions are like assholes.  Everybody's got one.

...intriguing composition and instrumental production, but i really don't care for U2's vocal delivery and production post-rattle and hum - contrast this with exit...

Nice Song. Very delicate, vulnerable.

I have to say the more I hear of this CD, the more I like it!
