That's actually a fairly common choral singing technique - though usually it's on the ends of words (such as "truf"), and with a microphone in your face you don't need to compensate for acoustics to make sure your diction is clear. |

It is derivative in that it's a pretty standard, minor-key, "cabaret"-style song structure. That music form was invented well before the 1960's - just ask Kurt Weill*. What do you have against The Turtles? *Pointed out several pages back. |
