The music of The Count and The Duke were the first sounds of rhythm and music to find my young ears as a child... I am a better person for it. Thanks Dad!

Lester Young, according to Charlie Parker, was pretty much his main influence.

My highschool jazz band ROCKED! The band was so good and so loud we often got to play dances for oldies at the American (pro-nounced 'Merkun') Legion. We'd play One O'clock Jump maybe 6 times a night. I had to tape my fingers, or they'd be bleeding by the middle of the second set! (I play string bass) |

I grew up with listening to my dad's major interest in big bands and classic jazz. As a teen I grew into rock and roll and "bandstand", etc. but, like my cousin reminded me when she quoted my aunt that whenever Basie came on her feet automatically started a-tappin'. I have been listening to RP for about 5 years now, and I say: Bless Bill's ears, and his courage to send out good music of all types. May good music always bless our ears and protect our sanity. One thing about great jazz - it's never old. |

The thumping double-bass line reminds me of the marching ants from the Tom & Jerry cartoons.

Classic Basie band with Lester Young on tenor, Jo Jones on drums, Walter Page on Bass, and Freddie Green on guitar. Worth seeking out is "Lester Leaps In," written for Young's fertile imagination. I recall reading a Rolling Stone review of a Basie reissue, and the critic (either Griel Marcus or Lester Bangs—but don't hold me to this ) said that Young was "the hippest dude that ever lived." |

I just love knowing that my mom (now passed) undoubtedly tapped her toes, smiled, twisted her shoulders, and bobbed her head to this when a wee lass.

from Wiki; It was reportedly titled "Blue Ball", at first, but a radio announcer feared that title was too risqué.
