I love that line as well and was going to say as much. Glad someone else beat me to the punch. |

This song is absolutely marvelous... love it soooo much... Suddenly I turned around and she was standing there with silver bracelets on her wrists and flowers in her hair. She walked up to me so gracefully and took my crown of thorns. "Come in," she said. "I'll give you shelter from the storm."

One of my favorite Dylan songs.
The one-eyed undertaker he blows a feudal horn come in she said I'll give you shelter from the storm.
Or, would that be "futile" horn? Hmm. I'l song to the song lyrics and look it up.

While rock doesn't demand or need perfection in rhythm or pitch like opera does, that doesn't mean it's worthless. Dylan seems to focus on lyric and rhythm, and give no shits about pitch. This is why I find his voice unappealing, and clearly why so many others have even stronger negative feelings.
Honestly not trying to bash Dylan; I used to think he was awful, but tried to give him a chance and I have to respect his immense talent and give him all due respect, but the sound to my ears is more harsh than pleasant. Someday I'd honestly like to read all of his songs ... I just can't listen to them.
I think all listeners of rock music need to draw the line somewhere what level of ability (or inability) they're willing to tolerate — conscious or not. Sometimes you can tune it out; some people can't even hear it unless it's really horrible. Most of Dylan's music seems to have a lack of melody that just can't hold my attention long enough to really listen to the words; even if I do it's just not enough of a song without the melody.
And I can't stand opera.
All that said, I have to agree with your sentiment again — people shouldn't judge Dylan just based on the vocals. I get it though. I'd argue the prevailing mood in Rock vocals has always been irony - it's anti-technical. I'd say Pavement and Malkmus was responsible for finally pushing it over the edge of irony into parody. NO ONE cares about technique in Rock vocals. |

Dylan is as much Americana as Ford, Chevy, Hank Williams Sr., Johnny Cash, Malibu Beach, or Times Square, and that is something I can see you will just never understand, however, 8.5 speaks for itself. Well you know, I never much cared for the Queen, but I'm sure there are a lot of chaps that do. |
