Everybody in my church loves this song...

from the year 1594:

Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet
Act 2, Scene 2:

JULIET:
'Tis but thy name that is my enemy;
Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.
What's Montague? it is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!
What's in a name? that which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call'd,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name,
And for that name which is no part of thee
Take all myself.

nooooooooooooo, this foray into the early 80s is going just a little too far!  The Police's Message in a Bottle had some gumption, this is just plain bland, sorry.  It doesn't give any sense of passion, really, just too wet and sentimental.

This has alway been one of my favorite songs, understated guitar, just perfect. If you like this song, you be be pleasantly surprised at the Steve MIller Band song, "Circle of Love". There is a similar tone on Steve's 2 1/2 minute guitar solo duing the fade and I think you will enjoy it. You Tube it. I am not saying that it is better than this song, few songs are....

This ist not only one of the best songs ever. This is also from one of the best vinyl albums ever. Starting from the great cover design going through deeply touching and genious lyrics and finally never ending in whatever this music does or has done with it's listener.

Thank you Mark Knopfler for beeing and thank you Bill for not forgetting!

Indigo Girls' version: it's overly dramatic (is that a sexist thing to say?), but it's great.

Bill, please play the live version.  Really adds another element to this song that has made it one of my "10"s.

I have a new found respect for Mark Knopfler in Dire Straits, but even more so as a solo artist. This is a great tune. Never at a lost for good lyrics and expertise in the 'guitar department'. What more can one ask for...? Hey...Bob Dylan...this is how to speak/sing, dude.

This is one of the most achingly beautiful songs of love and loss that I have even heard.  When I first heard this song it was about 11 or 12 years after it came out and I was in the Navy getting ready to lose my wife due to the strains of the military. It touched me very profoundly then and in fact in late 1992 I saw a concert via satellite of DS performing this song somewhere in Europe.  This song made me weep.  It was as much for the performance as the song itself.  I'll always love this song.
