But it is the actual words, the meaning, of this tune that makes it so powerful.

I know, you know the words...

But listen here, and read the words as John sings them. Hits it home...

Wow!  And all this time I thought it was about atheism and Communism.  Silly me.

Yep see that film. I think by the end of the 70's Lennon was much more politically educated than he was when he wrote songs like Revolution and Imagine - even he would probably have found them a little bit politically naive, however well meaning.

well, it most certainly does not need to be true to believe in it

Interesting.  Recognizing the song after the first couple notes, my initial reaction was: "Ugh, I have to sit though this"   That surprised me.  I mean, the song is just as good as always.  I guess its just the slow tempo combined with total familiarity. I'll get over it.

It's not the most interesting or stimulating of songs to listen to more than once a year or so. It's a simple song, with a simple message

It speaks volumes—and not well—about us that there was a faction that did not want this played after 9/11.  What a beautiful song.

Nothing that a Frank Zappa guitar solo couldn't improve.

This is one of the few songs that makes my cry. Why?  Emotionally the ideals are so appealing, but rationally I believe humanity is incapabable of those ideals because of what we are and what has made us so successful as a species.  Our soul and our self awareness are a blessing and a curse.
