Hiya Deadwing!

So glad for you that PT is coming back to Cinncinnati so you can see them yet again. And still hoping Steven and Co make it across upstate NY for another gig. Just keep praying I guess.

Your a lucky lady!{#Cool}

I think it's so similar as to not be a coincidence. Perhaps a respectful tip of the hat to Zep? As pointed out earlier, the rest of the song does not borrow from NQ.

These guys might have started out as a "joke", but they are quite seriously a very good band. I enjoy all their music. Thanks RP for sharing!

Hiya Deadwing,

Just being silly with the whole My Ashes vs No Quarter thing. The next big comparison is Time Flies and PF Animals!!! But I think that is a tribute and that song truly rocks so well.

Saw these guys at the House of Blues in Boston and it was so awesome. And you're right, watching Gavin play is such a treat. He's got at least four things going on at any one time with each hand and foot. The guy is such a performer. And quite the magician (hee hee).

Oh, and my original post to Westslope was on January 6. It's usually cold here end of November. Remember we are the snow capital of the east and January last year was pretty bitter.

Can't wait to see these guys this spring. Hopefully the Egg in Albany again?!

And Westslope, I do hope Mr. Wilson and Co make it to your part of Canada.

Peace.

Horstman!  I am so glad you got to see them live while they are still playing The Incident! They really are always amazing live and are so engaged with the audience. Good times!  =D

The Egg sounds like just the best venue to see them ever. I wish it wasn't so far away from me.

They will definitely be back in the States next Spring for more dates, but I doubt they will still be doing "The Incident" in it's entirety like they are now. It was the same with the FoaBP tour- on the first leg they played it start to finish and then took a break and came back with classics and crowd favs. On the second leg it was just a best of kind of show (which was awesome also!!!).

It's cold here too! (Strange for Cincy in the middle of October).   /sad

I don't know if you are all aware but amazon.com has music forums. In the classic rock forum there is a thread called "Everything Porcupine Tree". We are coming up to almost 4K posts. I have been posting there a lot lately. I would LOVE to see some of my RP PT friends on there (if you have the time or inclination offcoz).

take care you all!  /hugs!

Why do these people keep whining about this? It's like bitching that 2 songs have cello lines in them ffs.

Not you Horstman obviously!   =D It's cold up there already??  /sad

If Steven Wilson ever gets together with the likes of John Prine, Steve Goodman, Kris Kristofferson or similar, I'll be listening very, very carefully.

It is a completely separate situation when electronic/trip hop/DJ based groups (genres historically built upon appropriating music from older sources and placing it in a different, contemporary context) sample from other artists than when an "artsy" rock band cribs an intro from an "artsy" rock band. Electronic/trip hop/DJ based bands rarely have any difficulty acknowledging their sources and in the two examples you listed, the original performers as well as the rest of the contemporary musicians are credited side by side in the liner notes. Some reason I doubt that Steven Wilson has any shout outs for John Paul Jones in the liner notes for this song.

You are such the hypocritical ass. I'm glad you don't post or listen here anymore  {#Roflol}

Just being a funny man on a cold ass Tuesday.

I just listened to No Quarter about 5 times in a row and yeah, there are similarities. Big friggin deal. Like artists don't borrow from each other from time to time. I think Page would be honored to have some one mimic or interpret, play upon (improve upon?) a certain riff. Imitation is the highest form of flattery as they say.

Needless to say, both songs are great. And Porcupine Tree is not better than Zep, just very different and also very current.

horstman,  I don't have any LZ on my hard drive so I requested a friend Skype over 'No quarter'.

Of course, I know the song well.  How could I avoid it?   Unless I lived on Mars....  Back in the day, Peace Corps volunteers were playing No Quarter in the most remote darkest jungles of Africa.

Sure, there may be some similarities.  Being generous and all....  What is it, the modulating synth that inspires the connection listeners make?

Oops, not sure I want to listen to Loreena McKennit right now (alphabetical order....).

horstman,

I recognize the talent and innovation but was never a big Zep fan, perhaps because it was overplayed at noisy raucous parties.

I betcha Steven Wilson would write one mean country & western song if he put his mind to it.  LOL!

sdn, I like your interpretation.  Because I don't have a better one.  I believe this is the only song on the CD that imputes responsibility to the parents for unhappy, screwed-up children.

But at least the ashes made it to Wales.  Not all is for nought.

And my ashes drop upon a park in Wales
Never-ending clouds of rain, and distant sails... distant sails

 sdn wrote:

Here's my take:

All the things that I needed
I wasted my chances
I have found myself wanting

He's looking back on his life.

When a mother and father
Gave me their problems
I accepted them all
Nothing ever expected
I was rejected
But I came back for more

He grew up with abusive or negligent parents.

And my ashes fall over all the things we've said
On a box of photographs under the bed
...
And my ashes find a way beyond the fog
And return to save the child that I forgot
And my ashes fade among the things unseen
And a dream plays in reverse on piano keys

Then he dies (commits suicide?).  Then his spirit (his ashes), falling over the world, reviewing his memories, finds a way to go back in time, and rescue the child that he was.

Maybe it's a literal time-travel and rescue; or maybe it's just a reconciliation with himself after death.
