Sounds a bit like The Greenhornes (Broken Flowers soundtrack?) ... I like it.

I hate, hate, hate all the Dengue Fever tracks with the female vox. She's so screechy. This instrumental, however, is tolerable. The bass is a mite too repetetive for my tastes but at least it's not like a 10,000 rpm drill in my ear. That's a good thing, I guess.

I thought they were from Cambodia, but they are from LA. The wiki link sends you to the disease, not the band.

This song makes me want to take up smoking again, grease my hair back in a ducks-ass, dig out my Elvis shades and cruise around in a big red convertible.

How awesome would it be to see these guys play with Southern Culture on the Skids??

Also, most of the people who have been rating them down say it's because of the voice of the lead singer, not the music as a whole.

What I find interesting is of all of their songs from the Venus on Earth Album, not a single one is aout of the 5's and many are in the 4's. So why are there six songs from that album???

I checked these guys out on Youtube after hearing them on RP...pretty unusual. Great to hear Bill playing more....they still remind me of the B52's. Not their best cut though.

Impressive.

(And that transititon from Benny Goodman & His Orchestra - Bolero . . . Wow, Bill, that's some talent you're wielding there. This is just an outstanding set list.)

The bassline reminds me of the bassline in Duran Duran's song "New Religion" from the Rio album.

I like this.

I just read the band's biography at AMG, and now I like this even more.

I like Morphine. I like surf music. I like spy music. This? This I don't like. Bass line a little too prominent and repetitive for me.

I like this...it's sort of The Ululating Mummies by way of Morphine. Maybe sometime we can hear Dengue Fever with those wonderful Khmer vocals.

Yes, this is a cover of Mulatu Astatqe's "A Man Of Experience And Wisdom" which is an excellent tune captured on an excellent album (part of an Ethiopian music sampler series) Ethiopiques Vol. 4. I really dig tunes like this that are 30+ years old. Now we have a Cambodian band covering Ethiopian music which is really a trip because the music of Mr. Astatqe is based on his Ethiopian roots blended with his musical knowledge based on Western music schools. He was kind of the reverse of a lot of the American jazz artists (D. Byrd, J. Coltrane, H. Hancock etc) who were getting AFRICAN rythms into their music. So this tune went from a Western influence to Africa to Cambodia... and nobody got hurt. What a wonderful world.

Hmm. "Ethiopiques" is the name of series of releases featuring Ethiopian and Eritrean singers and musicians. I always assumed it was the name of a band.

At any rate, cool to hear this sort of thing on RP, although I also prefer the Mulatu Astatke version.

I like the version that appears on the Broken Flowers soundtrack (click here)
better than this one...

If you haven't heard it, check it out. The songs by "Mulatu Astatke" are great!

A different version than the one on the Broken Flowers soundtrack. Sounds more authentic to me. I like it and shall give it a 7.

This is pretty cool. Different kind of sound. Or should I say, different kind of arrangement of familiar sounds....

Wild. This is Yegelle Tezeta by the Ethiopiques. Which is the original?
