Mitchell, Bonham and Paice were the big three in the rock era. Paice is another one that gets nowhere near the recognition he deserves.
Ian Paice was awesome, but overshadowed by colleagues Blackmore and Lord, each of whom was among the best of his day at his instrument. He was just as good at his. "Mule" is particularly noteworthy. |

Someone gave a link to the Wiki entry which, in part, analyzed the song. I saw the reference to the Book of Isaiah. but Dylan's comment was quite confusing:
"I haven't fulfilled the balladeers's job. A balladeer can sit down and sing three songs for an hour and a half... it can all unfold to you. These melodies on John Wesley Harding lack this traditional sense of time. As with the third verse of "The Wicked Messenger", which opens it up, and then the time schedule takes a jump and soon the song becomes wider... The same thing is true of the song "All Along the Watchtower", which opens up in a slightly different way, in a stranger way, for we have the cycle of events working in a rather reverse order."
I guess it describes his way of telling the story in the song but it really doesn't add any analysis as to the meaning. Of course, Dylan always shied away from giving interpretations to his music. He wanted people to interpret things for themselves. In a way, that's very democratic of him.

Ave. Rating 9.3? C'mon! Classic...agreed! Innovative guitarist...agreed! But not 9.3! I believe people fawn over old stuff and give it far more credit than it deserves. Not to take anything away from Jimi...but let's face it...not that well constructed of a tune. "Little Wing"...though over played...is far more deserving of a higher vote...because the song structure is so much better. Just ramblin' here I guess...I'm not in good company.

I saw Watchmen in IMAX. Hearing this song on the IMAX system was possibly the highlight of the film.
Not to dis the movie, it was good, but this song is perfection. An easy 10.

There are very, very few songs that can withstand that type of abuse and sadly, IMO this is not one of them. |

This is the prime number one example of a fine song being absolutely ruined by EXTREME oversaturation the likes that few songs have seen! Great song! I absolutely hate it! |

I got to hear Bob Dylan's own live rendition last year and it blew me away. I don't know which version I prefer even though I'm a die hard Hendrix fan. |

i don't understand the negative bs about people who dig this music, and dig that it is a Dylan song. My opinion is that these folks are really missing out on a lot of good energy and music and being such negative must be well, a bummer

this song, and Stairway, have got to be the poster children for Classic Rock Radio Abuse. They have been rendered unlistenable. |

Geez, lighten up, fella! Compared to some of the genuinely moronic and just plain mean comments on these pages, h9xh9xh9x's is pretty tame, tho' I disagree with it, and fairly clever—finding a "hidden" message in the album title. |
