That's one of the great things about this song— it is universal... |

It's in Maryland... "(Don't Go Back To) Rockville" was the second and final single released by R.E.M. from their second studio album Reckoning. The song failed to chart on either the Billboard Hot 100 or the UK Singles Charts. The song was written by Mike Mills as a plea to his then girlfriend, Ingrid Schorr, not to return to Rockville, Maryland,<1> where her parents lived.<2> Schorr, who later became a journalist, has written about her amusement with the factual inaccuracies that often appear in books about the band<2> about her involvement with the song. Peter Buck has stated that the song was originally performed in a punk/thrash style, and that it was recorded for this single in its now more-familiar country-inspired arrangement as a joke aimed at R.E.M. manager Bertis Downs.<3> Over time, Mike Mills has taken lead vocals instead of Michael Stipe. On R.E.M.'s appearance on VH1 Storytellers in 1998, Mills performed the song solo on piano. A live version of the song was released as the B-side to "Leaving New York" in 2004 and on R.E.M. Live in 2007.

I absolutely LOVE REM - especially the period from ~1985 (starting with Fables of the Reconstruction) to 1988 (Green) and, to a lesser extent, up through 1991 (Out of Time). I also liked "Reckoning" from which 'Rockville' comes but personally favored other songs ('Pretty Persuasion' and 'Time After Time' come to mind first) over 'Rockville'. Having said that, I don't think my opinion matters much to anyone but me. "Rockville" is still a timeless song that evokes the era extremely well to a whole lot of people more than the songs I like better do, I suspect. For those with a taste for a bit more Southern Gothic, I suggest "Driver 8" or "Auctioneer" from 'Fables' or, even better, "Oddfellows Local 151" from "Document".

HAIL Atlantis! (pardon my Donovan)... We know from your comments that it isn't Hollow Man or Everybody Hurts, but just what is your other "tolerable" REM song? |
