Prime example of an *excellent* song being overplayed to the point where you instinctively change the channel once it comes on. A true 10 for the first 10 years I've listened to it, but only a 5 at this point.

Always dug his solo stuff. His stint with the Drifters was good too.

I think that the cover that Bill has displayed is from the UK greatest hits album, issued after this song was used in a jeans commercial. (Before the movie, I think.) Anyone remember the ad? Wasn't it the one with the pretty boy soaking in his jeans in a bath? Any women over 35 are sure to remember it...

Ben E. King - "Stand by me" Live-video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vbg7YoXiKn0
When the night has come, and the land is dark And the moon is the only light we will see No, I won't be afraid, oh, I won't be afraid Just as long as you stand, stand by me So darlin', darlin' stand by me Oh stand by me Oh stand, stand by me, stand by me
If the sky that we look upon should tumble and fall Or the mountain should crumble to the sea I won't cry, I won't cry, no, I won't shed a tear Just as long as you stand, stand by me And darlin', darlin' stand by me Oh stand by me Whoa stand now, stand by me, stand by me *Solo*
And darlin', darlin' stand by me Oh stand by me Oh stand now, stand by me, stand by me
If the sky that we look upon should tumble and fall Or the mountain should crumble to the sea I won't cry, I won't cry, no, I won't shed a tear Just as long as you stand, stand by me And darlin', darlin' stand by me Oh stand by me Whoa stand now, stand by me, stand by me So darlin', darlin' stand by me Oh stand by me Oh stand now, stand by me, stand by me Whenever you're in trouble won't you stand by me Oh stand by me Whoa stand now, oh stand, stand by me |

True story. My ex husband moved out with this song blasting on the stereo, played by a radio station. I swore my life was a movie and this was part of the soundtrack. Always a bizarre song for me, but none the less, still one of my favorites. Thanks for playing it RP.

The song is simply a classic. It is a great expression of love. Of course, I think of the movie "Stand By Me" which adds even more nostalgia for me - having come of age at the same time as that movie.

Although I didn't know it as a kid (grew up in the 70s/early 80s), I have always liked it from the first time I did hear it. Love John Lennon's cover, as well. |

Beautiful song. Ben E. was a great voice for the Drifters and solo.
But I love the edge of pain that Lennon put on his remake.

Classic high school slow dance back in the day - good to hear it again.
I see Dobie Gray's 'Drift Away' is in your archive - it would be another one.
Hope to hear it soon... |
