This sounds a lot like the song accompanying the Lacoste perfume TV ad. Twee is the word that comes to mind as soon as yer man's voice cuts in.

I don't disagree with your point about pop, but you're conflating three different genres. Johnson writes surf music, pure and simple. He originally wrote it as background music for surf movies. I can hear elements of that in common with DMB and Ben Harper, but I wouldn't lump them all together. (I personally like Johnson and can't stand Harper.) Having said that, I agree that pop radio can ruin almost any genre of music. |

If he used more than 4 notes and 2 note progressions, this might be interesting, but sadly it's Ho-Hum all the way. For that matter, this has been a pretty ho-hum morning with the last half-dozen or so numbers being snoresville. Or maybe I'm just in a grump after returning to wage-slavery after the holidays :(

Its the lead vocal doubled, then doubled again an octave apart. Miller did that all the time. (It was also part of the hook to Robert Palmer's 'Clues.') |

Well, just yesterday I was bragging to a friend about how much better RP is than our local "progressive rock" station. "That station plays stuff like Jack Johnson and David Gray. That's progressive "lite" rock! RP is way better!"
Oops. Wasn't that a David Gray song I heard about 1/2 hour ago? Now Jack Johnson. That guy gets on my last nerve. He received an overdose of cool somewhere, and it's not wearing off. You better play something I really, really like soon, or I'll... I'll... turn the volume down slightly. That's right, you heard me! Slightly!!!!

The whole thing just makes me not want to listen to find out if they are different words! Someone said below that he's makin' music inspired by the nature around him! Poor eyesight or he's in a deep gully of gray rocks! |

I usually make more of an effort to make positive comments ... but I need to register my irritation with his music ... i can understand why RP includes him on their play list ... it is surprising to me how something so bland can be so grating ... and i guess it is because his music is everywhere orthomd wrote: i agree.....this guy just leaves the same music playing for every song and changes the lyrics |

It's not Jack Johnson's fault FM radio can't be bothered to play a bigger variety of music. |
