9, minus 2 for the awful off-key mix. Yeah, yeah, I know, I know, it's deliberate but doesn't it make your ears cringe? (Is there a re-mastered un-off-key version?)

Exactly.  That whole background thing has always made my eyes water.

I'm pretty sure at least some of the guitar work on this was by Clapton.

One has to feel sorry for people who spend so much of their lives cringing.

Absolutely great song in all aspects except the dying organ that sounds like it's been through decenniae of fading and tape stretch.
No doubt it is supposed to sound like that, but wasn't it the guitar that was supposed to weep? ;)

A 9 anyhow.

I concur...If it ain't broke don't fix it...

Oddly enough, when I was younger and pretty much growing up on The Beatles and Pink Floyd, I never really cared for this song. For some reason, the older I get and more music I am exposed to, this song keeps getting better to the point where I think it may be the greatest song they ever did. I don't have the musical vocabulary to explain the techniques they use to get such a languid and cohesive mix of instruments, but damn this song "just works".

Hey - thanks so much for the youtube link. Saw Billy in ... was it 72 Seattle Arena? Just like this. Dancing, singing, impersonations. The guy had style. Stole the night and can you believe it he was the back up band for Grand Funk? What a night

Yep, Billy Preston was great live. I saw him open for George in '74 (?). It was an off night for George; he was hoarse and seemed tired and/or uninspired, but Billy was amazing. He was worth the price of admission for sure (the then outrageously high $10!).
