Well put. The excess I think is largely inspired by classical music--lots of noodling, but often quite structured. Somedays it's glorious, somedays it's hellish. I never got into it back in the day but it's a refreshing change from punk, rap, grunge and other sonic variations on "fuck you, I've got mine."
