Earnest to the point of pretentiousness... hard for me to feel the pain U2 is trying to elicit. I applaud the intent, but unless they're living the pain or providing all their earnings to relieve it, they're just making money off of the suffering of others. Callous... perhaps... or not. Get back to the hard edge voice and the riffs that made U2 who they are (were).

Did he just rhyme cigarette with minaret? Morrison just rolled over in his grave.

Haven't really liked anything newer then the Joshua Tree era of U2.

I think "zooropa" and "achtung, baby" were good efforts.

everything after that has been 100% pure derivative drivel and monumentally disappointing.

"All that you can't leave behind" was particularly awful.

I can't work out if i find this more or less pretentious than their usual stuff but i guess it kind of suits them. I quite like it.

Maybe this album is responsible for killing it.

Awww, crap, I always get suckered into thinking this is Harold Budd. Then Bono comes in. Not bad for a U2 song, though. Oh well, time to hit the iPod for the Budd..

You phillistines gotta let this band grow as they will... not the way you want them to. This is art. Treat it as such.

Agreed. I'm not completely wild about it, but it's an interesting new direction for a band that . . . well . . . could use one, maybe. I kinda like it.
