I love it when people proclaim "the best guitarist ever!" Really gets the voices flowing.

I'd match Joe against any blues guitarist around today.

But when you talk about the best guitar player EVER...it's all a matter of taste. You really can't compare someone like oh, say Mark Knopfler or Lindsey Buckingham with guys like Robin Trower and the Edge. Like apples to crabapples.

However, when talking about the very best, these names have to be on the list for consideration:

BB King
Eric Clapton
Jimmy Page
Jeff Beck
Jimi
Steve Howe
Steve Hackett
Gilmour

Then there are what I like to call "the technicians" - Joe Satriani, Tom Morello, Ivan Smirnov, Steve Vai, etc.

With the difference in style, genre and type, I don't think you can ever call a single guitar player the best ever...

"the technicians" Yes, Until I found the right word to describe Yngwie Malmsteen and co.

I love Joe, but I'd also like to hear a bit of dirtier blues, like say the type played by Doyle Bramhall lll. He has to rank right up there as well.

I have this cd and this track came up recently on my hi-fi at home on a random playlist.

I have to say, I cranked it up to indecent levels to the point where Mrs Poacher thought I was going to break the windows.

It was worth it. 10

Seeing all the Robin Trower comparisons here made me reply:

I've seen both of these guys live and technically and in terms of showmanship Robin doesn't even come close to Joe, not by a long shot. From a guitarist's perspective, Robin needs loads of effect pedals and enhancements to impress and reach his sound as where Joe can blow you away with an unplugged acoustic guitar if he wants to.

It's all related to taste, i know, but in terms of skills i'd say it's not fair to compare Robin and Joe.

This song, 8 --> 8

Don't care what anyone sez, this guy's riffs remind me of ... Robin Trower.

An I love it all!

Like Sonny Landreth to my ears. I like a couple of Joe's tracks, but this one is way too bombastic for my taste. As for blues originality, virtually all blues is 100% derivative. What's the beef... you either like the blues or you don't.

Maybe Sonny waybackwhen, but last week he was a reeeefined slide guitar God.

Absolutely Robin Trower.

I'm also hearing Stevie Ray and Sonny Landreth. Guy's soaked 'em up by the bucketful.

Head bangers banquet- Robin Trower is clapping hands, friendly, and Duane Alman rolls in his grave, but, I can't helpmyself from picking the keys while playing air-guitar!!
