This song makes for one heck of a thoroughly effective, pointed reproof, if used in that particular fashion.

Jeremiah 46:10

10 But that day belongs to the Lord, the Lord Almighty—
a day of vengeance, for vengeance on his foes.
The sword will devour till it is satisfied,
till it has quenched its thirst with blood.
For the Lord, the Lord Almighty, will offer sacrifice
in the land of the north by the River Euphrates.

Jeremiah 31:31-34

31 "The time is coming," declares the LORD, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. 32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them," declares the LORD. 33 "This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time," declares the LORD. "I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34 No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest," declares the LORD. "For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more."

Amen!

Okay, maybe it's just me but I've NEVER thought of this as a religious song or even a love song, in terms of the lyrics. The lyrics, to me, sound angry, and for whatever reason I've ALWAYS thought they were about him having a fight with his wife...about sex, actually. Ahem.

Did I disappoint you?
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without
Well it's too late tonight
To drag the past out into the light...

That sounds like something pretty specific, and not very loving. (He wants it, she doesn't.)

Did I ask too much?
More than a lot.
You gave me nothing,
Now it's all I got

And, we hurt each other then we do it again...

I can't be holding on to what you got
When all you got is hurt

I like the song...I like the tune, but as I said, the lyrics, to me...well. This is no love song as far as I can tell. ..

Ah, but the lyrics are about love, read over the entire lyrics in this song. Love isn't just about the good times. Love can be painful at times. Love can break as well as heal.
Imho the song is about trying to face the pain of not only a relationship, but a world if division and strife in humanity.
The overall message is to keep trying to love and to mend/heal/ over come the pain we cause each other.

If you look at the list of "artists" who have won Grammys over the last 2 decades, that does not really mean it's that much of a compliment.

bono's politics are pretentious. The music is sublime.
