BTW: I was privileged to meet Mr. Brubeck and his group several times when they played in San Diego back in the late 1950's; one time there was a scheduling screw up at the Musicians' Union hall and they didn't have a place to rehearse .. so naturally, my dad invited them all over to our home (4529 Rhode Island Street, San Diego, CA 92116) where we had a 16x54 foot living room ... They jammed for hours that time, my dad would occasionally sit in on upright bass and I was once invited to sit at the drums and try remember my lessons from Mr. Leo Hamilton about Back Beats. At the time, it was as exciting as when Gene Krupa came over for a visit and after going outside to fix his nose came back in and played a 30 minute set of random drum sounds that — if God had been good to me then and digital recorders were invented — would be priceless today. But, Mr. Brubeck and his group were absolutely the most laidback and tightly integrated bunch of musicians I've seen. Whew .. memories are golden — some say .... I just wish I could go back ... Misterfixit, What's your take on Brubeck's music? I've known jazz aficionados who look down on Dave, finding his work too structured and soulless. I think they're being snobbish, but I've had no musical training or background. Was Brubeck's music real jazz, whatever that means? Was he limited or second-rate? I've heard some of his work from live performances in Japan (thanks RP!) and it's a little looser than stuff from "Take Five." Did he put out even more freeform pieces? Thanks! Hope you haven't found any bugs in the Pentagon lately... |
TerryS May 03, 2013 - 18:24 | Simply put; this is good stuff. |

Ever notice that most of the prog rock champions come from the British Isles. A partial list follows: Yes, Procul Harem, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, E,L&P, Led Zepplin, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson.

kaybee Mar 18, 2013 - 18:16 | I love this 70's retro sound. |
ckcotton Mar 18, 2013 - 11:46 | Was lucky to see these guys (and all 6 other keyboard and touring band members) play Bimbo's in SF back when this was new.... one of the all time best shows... Its retro-electronica at its best! |
milipili Feb 26, 2013 - 02:14 | French people sure do know their electronica |

unclehud Jan 24, 2013 - 17:56 | whoa. Just the ticket for a slow savoring stare out the window towards the nighttime skyline of one of the oldest cities in North America. Frenchfolk just seem to enjoy life a little better than the rest of us. |
westslope Jan 24, 2013 - 17:53 | Solid 10. This ranks among the best ambient electronica of the period. |

k1j2cat Dec 29, 2012 - 11:54 | I got this album (used) recently and it was perfect for driving back from San Francisco in the rain, down the 101 (California style). Was the best of the four CD's I'd brought on the trip. Definitely worth leaving on the repeat cycle. |
AliGator Dec 29, 2012 - 11:52 | This sounds as fresh as it did the first time I heard it on RP...probably ten years ago. |
justsomeone Dec 21, 2012 - 16:28 | Goofy plays the bass... |
