I agree with Bill. "It's a good riff and it can hold up more than one song."
I.e. a song should not be 'savaged' just because it borrows a riff, if that riff works well in the new context.

Nevertheless, I would hope that The Charlatans give credit where credit is due.

Yeah, I recognize the Floyd riff, but the song is good. So who cares? I have no idea why such a good song gets such low ratings. I give it a 7.

Agreed. That Pink Floyd song has an excerpt of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "You'll Never Walk Alone", sung by Liverpool Football Club's supporters at a match. Should we knock Floyd and the LFC fans for riffing on Rodgers and Hammerstein?

Pink what ? Weren't they the ones with the guy who played a single note all the time on stage and wasn't housetrained or something?

Maybe so, but imitation shows lack of originality and talent with regard to this tune.

You misspelled David Gilmour.

As far as I can tell, Floyd just sampled a crowd singing the Rodger and Hammerstein tune "You'll Never Walk Alone" at a football game for their song Fearless . The guitar riff, which plays under the fans singing the tune, doesn't seem to appear anywhere within the showtune. So it looks like Floyd came up with that themselves. Whether or not you think this band is paying tribute to Floyd or ripping them off depends on your perspective I guess.

If you could follow up with the riff from "Another Brick in the Wall" and work the baseline from "Money" in there somehow I bet you could make a few heads literally explode . . . {#Wink}

Please everyone - continue to point out that the riff isn't an original! Your posts are so entertaining, and your disdain is so exhilarating and refreshing! I feel like I haven't read good music criticism until I saw this thread! I am just so glad you all took your valuable time to write such introspective and original posts! I feel like I just read Shakespeare for the first time! I am so excited that I can't stop using exclamation points!

I think that borrowing from artists is like giving props to them. It;s done in so many songs, and I think it's cool, like a little inside joke.

That's what Bill said too. {#Eek} Guess I should stop complaining about the Dandy Warhols.
