Seen a man standin' over a dead dog lyin' by the highway in a ditch He's lookin' down kinda puzzled pokin' that dog with a stick Got his car door flung open he's standin' out on Highway 31 Like if he stood there long enough that dog'd get up and run It struck me kinda funny, seemed kinda funny sir to me Still at the end of every hard earned day people find some reason to believe
Now Mary Lou loved Johnny with a love mean and true She said "Baby I'll work for you every day, bring my money home to you" One day he up and left her and ever since that She waits down at the end of that dirt road for young Johnny to come back Struck me kinda funny, funny yeah to me* How at the end of every hard earned day people find some reason to believe
Take a baby to the river, Kyle William they called him Wash the baby in the water, take away little Kyle's sin In a whitewash shotgun shack an old man passes away Take his body to the graveyard, over him they pray Lord won't you tell us, tell us what does it mean At the end of every hard earned day people find some reason to believe
Congregation gathers down by the riverside Preacher stands with a Bible, groom stands waitin' for his bride Congregation gone and the sun sets behind a weepin' willow tree Groom stands alone and watches the river rush on so effortlessly Wonderin' where can his baby be Still at the end of every hard earned day people find some reason to believe
This song exemplifies why I like Bill's programming.
And here's why I love his programming. If you hear an off-beat cover version, chances are very good that Bill lets the original have the next word. Case in point: The Beat Farmers covered Reason To Believe , and on the next track, Bruce gets back at them with Cover Me . Very nicely done, Bill.
Beat Farmers did part of the most excellent sound track for the ancient computer game "Redneck Rampage", along with Mojo Nixon and Reverend Horton Heat .... The cuts only appear on the game CD so next tim eyou see one at a Yard Sale, grab it and rip those tracks.
I really love the " Bigger Stones " off of this album. It was the first song from the Beat Farmers I heard on 91X San Diego back in the day. That station really influenced my musical taste. I'm thankful I could get them on my sensitive FM radio in my truck and on the job site. They helped me make a lot of money! Piece work + great music = $
This song exemplifies why I like Bill's programming. On a song by song basis, I may not have ever caught on to the Beat Farmers. But I heard this song of theirs first, thanks to Bill, and it remains my favorite BF song, and it lead me to acquire and enjoy most of their music. These are strong lyrics, and I definitely prefer the punch that the Beat Farmers gave this song over the original. Thank you Bill for giving me yet another band to enjoy!!!
I am not in general a great Springsteen fan. In fact, I don' generally see what all the fuss is about.
However.
The Nebraska album is sacred. And thou shalt not cover songs therefrom.
I'm a Springsteen fan, and—oddly perhaps— Nebraska probably has more "coverable" songs that his other albums. Some of the "Atlantic City" covers are sublime. IMHO this is because they're stripped down and don't carry the arrangement baggage of his high octane stuff; easier to chart when you don't have to account for Federici or Clarence.
Man... I haven't heard this band since about '89 when I was hanging around El Toro with some friends. The band were a lot of fun. Surprised and pleased to hear them on RP after all this time. Thanks Bill/Rebecca!

I would make an exception for the Michael Penn/Aimee Mann cover of this song...
